Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of this qualification is to train computer scientists who will be able to work in any sector of the South African economy. These computer scientists should also be able to work as researchers.

Recognition of prior learning:

An Honours degree in Computer Science or any other indication of sufficient prior learning.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
Assessment Criteria:

Assessment criteria will be based on testing the learners knowledge of the chosen fields of study and on his/her mini-dissertation.

Alternatively if the learner has opted to do the masters degree by dissertation only then it will be this dissertation that will be assessed.

Formative Assessment:
  • Examination of knowledge of material from modules
  • Background knowledge evaluation
  • Regular reporting
  • Draft review
  • Assessment of thesis

    Summative Assessment:
  • Examination of thesis
  • Oral defence of thesis 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Vertical articulation will be possible for those qualifiers who wish to proceed with a doctoral degree. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Suitably qualified external examiners with experience in the required areas. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Experience in the particular field at this level and a PhD qualification. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
