PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

To produce leaders in the area of Marine and Ship Surveying Law with the idea of increasing the capacity of South Africa's maritime industry to be more effective and globally competitive. It is hoped that this programme will also contribute to the development of capacity on the eastern and western seaboards of Africa in this area, which has great significance for the safety of shipping. Graduates are equipped to contribute on a wide range of marine and ship surveying issues. This will be informed by their experience in research.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Learners must have graduated with a LLB or B Proc or B Com degree or have acquired a level of experience which, in the opinion of the University Senate, equips them to study and research at Masters level

Learners may be admitted if they have acquired a level of experience, which, in the opinion of the Senate equips them to study and research at Masters level.

Produce a dissertation exploring an aspect of law, satisfactory in form and content, which makes a contribution to knowledge; or produce publishable articles

Integrated Assessment

Students will demonstrate their mastery of the required exit level outcomes through an integrated array of assignments, presentations, tutorials, and examinations. The research dissertation will be a test of whether integration of knowledge and application skills has occurred and whether multidisciplinary skills have been developed. Students will also be assessed on the basis of the contribution that they have made to maritime studies through the research they have done. They will be assessed on the thoroughness of their research into the appropriate sources, the critical approach to these materials, etc.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

Coursework modules offered in this programme can be taken by students on other postgraduate programmes within this University and by students at other institutions of higher learning.ning

MODERATION OPTIONS

All assessments are second-examined by suitably qualified external examiners. All dissertations are subject to the scrutiny of three examiners, one of whom is external to the University.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

At present, assessors are not registered, but all academic staff members teaching on the programme are considered to be qualified to do so by virtue of their appointment to the academic posts concerned.
