The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The qualification aims:
1. To enable learners to appreciate the principles and methods in mining fully.
2. To equip learners with methods of planning and executing research programs in mining.
3. To enable learners to know how to develop new ideas to improve the technology in
4. To equip learners with methods of projecting into the access of little or no data in the mining.
5. To enable learners to recognise the need for substituting new and valid ideas for old ideas that are not more acceptable in the mining industry.
6. To equip learners with the methods of making a valid new contribution in the mining technology. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

    This qualification comprises of a compulsory thesis at NQF Level 10 totalling 360 Credits. 

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    1. Initiate and execute research programmes as required.
    2. Make a contribution in development of mining technology to meet the demands of mining especially in complex terrain. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Integrated Assessment:
    This will consist of two measure seminar presentations. The progress made in the research programme will be assessed by the Postgraduate board as appropriate:
  • Written examinations.
  • Oral examinations.
  • PhD thesis.

    This qualification compares with the following international qualifications in terms of the range of competencies in the learning content offered. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification allows possibilities for horizontal articulation.

    The external assessor must discuss his comments with the Head of Department to insure that the quality of the programme remains of a high and acceptable standard
