PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
STUDENTS ENROLLING FOR THE MASTER IN APPLIED ENGLISH
LANGUAGE STUDIES HAS TWO OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM:

A) AN INSERVICE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING
B) AN ENHANCEMENT COURSE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE FOR
GENERAL LANGUAGE PRACTIONERS

A). MASTER IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDIES WHICH FOCUSES ON TEACHER INSERVICE, IS STRUCTURED TO PROVIDE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHERS WITH AN ACADEMIC GROUNDING IN THOSE ASPECTS OF LANGUAGE KNOWLEDGE THAT WILL INCREASE THEIR AWARENESS AS PROFESSIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHERS. THE PROGRAME WILL DWELL ON LINGUISTICS OF ENGLISH, APPLIED ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDIES, AND INSIGHTS GAINED WILL BE APPLIED

TO SECOND LANGUAGE PROBLEMS, PARTICULARLY THOSE OF SOUTH AFRICAN ORIGIN. THE STRONG RESEARCH BIAS SHOULD EQUIP TEACHERS WITH THE CURRENT TRENDS IN ACTION RESEARCH, WHICH, HOPEFULLY, WILL RESULT IN TEACHERS WHO WILL BE REFLECTIVE AND INNOVATIVE IN THEIR TEACHING APPROACHES.

B). THE ABILTY TO COMPETENTLY MANIPULATE LANGUAGE IS A FUNDAMENTAL INGREDIENT FOR SURVIVAL IN THE "KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY". A RESEARCH INTO LANGUAGE CHARACTERISTICS AND BEHAVIOUR SHOULD PROVIDE LANGUAGE PRACTIONERS WITH THE BACKGROUND AND CONFIDENCE TO UNDERTAKE CAREER OPTIONS, WHICH UTILISE EXTENSIVE LANGUAGE SKILLS. A MASTER IN LANGUAGE STUDIES OPENS OPPORTUNITIES IN AREAS LIKE:

- PUBLIC RELATIONS
- ADVERTISING
- JOURNALISM
- PUBLIC SERVICE
- PUBLISHING
