PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The learner will have gained specialist competence in:
  • Applying theoretical linguistic and or literary principles and models in a specific language
  • Various choices of subjects from the following: Afrikaans and Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, isiZulu, Sesotho, Latin, General Linguistics, Literacy Science and the History of Classical Culture and
  • The field of language and communication for purposes of continuing with studies at NQF levels 8 and 9.

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Learners are required to demonstrate their specialist understanding and application of the fundamental, theoretical and reflective tools in either writing dissertations, or executing various assignments and successfully completing oral and written examination in the specific language selected.


    INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT


    Dissertations, or assignments and oral and written evaluation that are integrated with the curriculum. Both internal and external examiners are appointed for each dissertation paper. External evaluation also takes place during departmental evaluation. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Vertical: Access to Ph.D in the language of specialisation selected for the M.A. (Languages)

    Horizontal: Articulate to any other M.A. degree. Limited recognition of some courses completed in M.A. (Languages) 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • A system of external peer review and evaluation of departments including evaluation of the standards and assessment practices for Department
  • Qualifications: The minimum academic and workplace experience requirements at a level above the level of moderation
  • Appropriate professional criteria will be drafted in the case of workplace assessment
  • Mentorship: All junior and new members of staff are mentored by senior members as they work together in teams. All assessment done by external assessors is quality controlled by internal staff.
  • Any moderation criteria as determined by the ETQA
  • All examinations will be internally moderated
  • Dissertations will be assessed internally as well as externally 

  • CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    The academic staff of the University of the Free State complies with standards set by Senate and will exercise their assessment within the approved quality assurance system of the university. Assessors will also meet all criteria as stipulated by the relevant ETQA.

  • Accredited by the awarding body after achieving competency against Unit Standards of competency for Assessors
