The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The qualification aims:
  • To provide learners who can produce original knowledge and have skills that will enable them to undertake independent research in the socio-economic sector.
  • To provide S.A with skilled people who can apply their sociological knowledge and expertise to transform a society characterised by inequality to one of social accountability.
  • To produce people who can transfer and communicate their knowledge in logic, scientific and effective manner. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

    Entry Requirements:
    The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Master of Philosophy in Sociology, NQF Level 9.

    QUALIFICATION RULES 
    This qualification comprises of a compulsory thesis at NQF Level 10 totalling 360 Credits. 

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    1. Identify a problem or research topic, to evaluate existing knowledge and to apply available or new methodology and techniques to investigate the problem with limited supervision.
    2. Demonstrate sensitivity to the problems of rural, developing areas and enthusiasm to undertake action research involving rural communities.
    3. Demonstrate the understanding of the value of indigenous theory and knowledge and show some expertise incorporating it in research projects.
    4. Generate new knowledge and to communicate and transfer it effectively and in a scientific and logic manner. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
  • Plan, conduct and report the result of a qualitative or quantitative investigation in the sociological field independently.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Evaluation of the scientific, editorial and knowledge contribution of the written report (thesis).
    Oral exam (optional).
  • Portfolios.
  • Workplace assessments.
  • Oral examinations.
