PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

This qualification includes the various specialisations. Please refer to "Notes" for details on the specialisations.

Purpose:

The qualifying learner will have the competence to apply advanced creative problem solving abilities, advanced insight and specialised theoretical knowledge, management and communication skills in the implementation of design intervention based on appropriate independent research and analysis of need driven problems in the fields of interior architecture and product design.

Range Statements:
1. An academic research process with learning outcomes that culminate in the competence to apply creative problem solving ability, specialised knowledge, communication skills and management principles to the knowledge base and/or the practical implementation of Interior and Product Design, after appropriate research and critical analysis on an individual basis.
2. Serves as a basis for further learning in the field of Interior Design, Architecture, product design and can also lead to Learning in the broader field of design activity.
3. Adds value to the learner as it provides for:

Employment possibilities as a professional Interior Designer.

Status as a professional Interior Designer.

Marketability in terms of the competencies as in the specified outcomes.

Recognition by Design South Africa and the international bodies that guide and control the profession.

Contribution to the economy through employment or self-employment.

Contribution to the theory base of the field of study.

1. Identify and research a concept, need or problem related to Interior Architecture and/or Product Design.
2. Develop a study proposal in consultation with the study leader(s) to enable and facilitate the research process and/or strategy.
3. Be creative in the problem solving strategy and the research process and methodology.
4. Exhibit an understanding of responsible and sound technology and the application of such technology in the environment of interior architecture and product design.
5. Create and manage the documentation required by the research, design and technological processes.
6. Effectively communicate through the appropriate media with the client body, authorities, contractors, professional team and all other involved and affected role players.
7. Manage the research process and the application of results and/or knowledge in the professional arena and the interface with industry.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

Qualifications required:
Criteria as required by the University of Pretoria, Design South Africa (DSA), the International Federation of Interior Architects and Designers (IFI) and other relevant authorities
Required level of qualification: A Master's degree, five-year professional degree or similar level by virtue of experience.

Career experience required:
A minimum of 5 years practical experience in the field of Interior Design, Architecture and/or related field of design activity
