PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The first purpose of this qualification is to give the learner grounding in basic toxicological principles and intoxications. The learner should gain postgraduate knowledge and experience in toxicology to a level of competence that leads to registration as a specialist veterinary toxicologist with the South African Veterinary Council.

The second purpose is to provide the skills, knowledge and practical experience to teach toxicology to pre-graduate veterinary learners and nurses and postgraduate honours and masters learners in toxicology. An attitude of lifelong learning will be fostered, ensuring continued self-development in the discipline.

The third purpose of this qualification is to provide an understanding of research methodology and gain practical research experience through the completion of a dissertation. With this knowledge a contribution to the advancement of scientific knowledge can be made through active research.

The fourth purpose of this qualification is to provide a sound basis with which to contemplate further doctorate studies in toxicology or any other related discipline.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science, NQF Level 8.

  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science Honours, NQF Level 8.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    One:
  • Conduct routine toxicological field investigations.
  • Perform certain analytical procedures.
  • Collect samples and submit for additional diagnostic tests.
  • Interpret and assess the analytical results.
  • Provide rational, specific, supportive or symptomatic treatment.
  • Advise the clients on specific prophylactic measures.

    Two:
  • Publication of research undertaken in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Presentation of research results at a scientific congress.
  • A written dissertation that is acceptable to internal and external assessors.

    Three:
  • Pass appropriate ancillary subjects under the supervision of internal and external assessors.
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge in toxicology by passing written, practical and oral examinations under the supervision of internal and external assessors.
  • Complete a literature study that is up-to-date, appropriate and relevant to the research topic.
  • Critically evaluate literature in light of current understanding.

    Four:
  • Take responsibility and treat clinical cases within accepted professional norms.
  • Communicate and co-operate with colleagues to obtain additional information.

    Five:
  • Demonstrate ability to debate and perform techniques reported in relevant, appropriate and current literature.

    Formative Assessment:
    Learners give feed-back to supervisors on research results and present seminars or literature reviews in toxicology.
    Continual assessment and monitoring of the learner during research and studies while under the supervision of a promoter and/or co-promoter. Feedback is given to the learner on a continual basis.
    The progress of a learner is monitored by a guidance committee allocated to the learner by the Postgraduate Curriculum Committee of the Faculty of Veterinary Science.

    Summative Assessment:
    Portfolio work that has been completed and assessed by assessors and moderators.
    Written, oral and practical examinations occur at predetermined intervals and at the end of the period of study. These examinations are set to cover theoretical knowledge, clinical/practical aspects and acquired experience.
