| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| The first purpose of this qualification is to give the learner grounding in basic toxicological principles and intoxications. The learner should gain postgraduate knowledge and experience in toxicology to a level of competence that leads to registration as a specialist veterinary toxicologist with the South African Veterinary Council.
The second purpose is to provide the skills, knowledge and practical experience to teach toxicology to pre-graduate veterinary learners and nurses and postgraduate honours and masters learners in toxicology. An attitude of lifelong learning will be fostered, ensuring continued self-development in the discipline. The third purpose of this qualification is to provide an understanding of research methodology and gain practical research experience through the completion of a dissertation. With this knowledge a contribution to the advancement of scientific knowledge can be made through active research. The fourth purpose of this qualification is to provide a sound basis with which to contemplate further doctorate studies in toxicology or any other related discipline. |

Two: Three: Four: Five: Integrated Assessment: > Portfolio. > A dissertation is completed and evaluated by internal and external assessors. > Results are published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. > Papers and/or posters are presented at local or international conferences. > Ancillary subjects are evaluated by means of tests and examinations under the supervision of internal and external examiners. > Perform selected analytical procedures and interpret analytical results. Formative Assessment: Learners give feed-back to supervisors on research results and present seminars or literature reviews in toxicology. Continual assessment and monitoring of the learner during research and studies while under the supervision of a promoter and/or co-promoter. Feedback is given to the learner on a continual basis. The progress of a learner is monitored by a guidance committee allocated to the learner by the Postgraduate Curriculum Committee of the Faculty of Veterinary Science. Summative Assessment: Portfolio work that has been completed and assessed by assessors and moderators. Written, oral and practical examinations occur at predetermined intervals and at the end of the period of study. These examinations are set to cover theoretical knowledge, clinical/practical aspects and acquired experience. |
