PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To empower a veterinarian with the knowledge and skills to:
1. Be eligible to apply for registration with the SA Veterinary Council as a "Specialist Pathologist: Clinical Pathology".
2. Manage the clinical-pathological aspects and resources of a veterinary diagnostic laboratory in the private or public sector.
3. Be able to pursue an academic/research career in the field of clinical laboratory diagnostics at a tertiary education institution or research facility. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Entry Requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science Honours, NQF level 8.
    Or
  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science, NQF Level 8.

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    1. Be conversant with the standard/state of the art diagnostic, interpretive and methodological issues in Veterinary Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Cytology, Quality Assurance, Applied Biometry, Laboratory Equipment and Laboratory Management.
    2. Be able to conduct the analyses/procedures in which constitute "routine" in diagnostic laboratories.
    3. Be conversant with the published literature and research methods applicable to this field of study. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    One:
  • Oral (viva-voce) examination on these topics and/or.
  • Literature reviews/study submitted for evaluation by the supervisor and external evaluator(s).

    Two:
    Either:
  • Work in the routine veterinary diagnostic laboratory in the Faculty of Vet. Science and perform the procedures under the tutelage of the supervisor,
    Or
  • Provide certification to this effect from a suitably qualified person who can vouch for such competence obtained at another approved diagnostic facility.

    Three:
  • Conduct a research project and produce a dissertation as well as draft publication acceptable for an ISE journal.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Portfolios.
    Simulations.
    Work-place assessments.
    Written examinations.
    Oral examinations.

    Other:
    Evaluation of a dissertation by internal and external examiners.
    Fundamental content evaluated by written examinations and simulations.
