| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| This combined total qualification is designed to provide South Africa with top quality Technika educators who can practise in the Senior Phase and FET Phase. One of the most important aims of the qualification is to provide Technika students with the required knowledge, skills and attitudes in order to ensure leadership roles in the field of Technika, to provide students with an adequate background in the complex education environment and tot allow them to pursue further education. |

Learning outcomes: The student will show knowledge of his/her specialisation in Technika (Civil, Electronics or Mechanical). The student will be able to demonstrate the necessary teaching skills of his/her specific Technika specialisation by improvising with the necessary equipment and methods. The student will be able to accurately assess the progress of the learners by implementing various assessment tools. This will be evident through the following roles played out by a Technika educator: Mediator of learning in Technika: Interpreter and designer of learning programmes and materials in the Senior- and FET Phase: Administrator and manager Researcher and lifelong learner: Citizenship and pastoral role: Learning area/subject/discipline/phase/ specialist in the Technika field: Assessor: Diploma in Education After completion of a second year course of study the student will be able to work as an assistant teacher Critical cross-field outcomes: 1. Student teachers in Technika will: Assume the teaching commitments, duties and functions of a Technika classroom and workshop facilitator of learning, including all pastoral, contractual, legal and administrative responsibilities; 2. Demonstrate a knowledge of all GET and FET areas of experience required by the national and provincial/regional school curricula and be able to relate these to professional studies and school experience, as well as to the needs and goals of the community to be served; 3. Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of one of three Technika subjects: Civil, Mechanical and Electronically with the skills of researching and teaching, as well as interpreting and developing curricula; 4. Apply the principles of educational theory to all relevant learning and teaching situations and practice; 5. Display an understanding of the interrelated, holistic nature of knowledge, through being able to integrate cross-curricular topics such as multicultural education, technology, the world of work, entrepreneurship and life orientation with Technika subjects; 6. Command the medium(s) of instruction with a proficiency which allows for the facilitation of learning in a manner appropriate to the stage of language development of the pupils; 7. Be sensitive to and participate meaningfully in the learners' acquisition and development of language in all areas of the curriculum; 8. Diagnose and deal with the more common special educational needs of Technika students; 9. Reflect critically on their own practice and a variety of educational situations and make appropriate decisions; 10. Be encouraged to shift their workplace and place of study outdoors in order to bring technical theory and practical technical application closer together; 11. Be able to facilitate Technika-related learning according to the demands and needs of Outcomes Based Education (OBE) and Curriculum 2005; 12. | The actual demonstrations of the outcomes in an authentic context would be seen in School Experience. The outcomes may also be demonstrated in simulated school contexts, in discussions and debates, in essays and presentations and in formal class tests and examinations. Continuous assessment is practised to a large extent. Reflections and self-evaluation are developed and managed.
Practical projects, class projects, assignments (both practical and theoretical) tests and examinations (where the application of different strategies in the teaching and learning environment is demonstrated) are also utilised. Other forms of teaching and assessment include organised, structured visits to outdoor classrooms. Possibilities for exit in mid-stream: Providing such a student intends going to an accredited institute of learning and providing he/she intends registering for the same qualification, exit in mid-stream is possible. What does this lead to after completion? Students who have met all the requirements for the Baccalaureus Educationis (FET: Technika) are suitably qualified to teach the relevant specialisation (Technology) to learners in the Senior Phase (grade 5 to 9), as well as to learners in the FET Phase (grade 10 to 12), be it in the formal, non-formal or informal educational sector of society. Students are also able to apply their knowledge in the private sector. In this regard, the different courses endeavour to train students to use sophisticated pieces of equipment and to devise practical experiments by utilising all kinds of available materials.
