PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The first purpose of this qualification is to gain a level of knowledge and experience to be recognised as a specialist in the field of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging and to be registered as such by the SA Veterinary Council as well as being internationally recognised by appropriate examining authorities. As a specialist in Diagnostic Imaging the incumbent should be able to perform imaging procedures in a wide range of animal species using a variety of imaging modalities and to interpret these images correctly, resulting in increased welfare of animals and their owners as well as the environment.

The second purpose of this qualification is to share this knowledge with associated discipline professionals in Veterinary Science to enhance improved diagnostic capabilities of disease conditions.

The third purpose of this qualification is to provide skills, knowledge and practical experience in the field of Diagnostic Imaging to pre-graduate veterinary learners and nurses, postgraduate honours, masters and doctoral learners as well as continuing education courses for non-degree purposes.

The fourth purpose of this qualification is to provide an understanding of research methodology and practical research experience through the completion of a dissertation. A contribution to scientific knowledge will be made and the qualification prepares the incumbent for future research, doctoral studies, evaluation of research protocols, critical evaluation of published data and a stimulus for lifelong learning.

  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science, NQF Level 8.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:
  • Formulate and perform an appropriate imaging protocol using a variety of imaging modalities.
  • Correlate the imaging findings with other associated tests and examinations to make a correct diagnosis.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:
  • Write a dissertation that is acceptable to peer review and internal assessors and publish these results in a peer-reviewed journal and present the findings at a scientific congress.
  • Disseminate knowledge in the field of diagnostic imaging by means of at least one continuing education article and oral presentation to practitioners.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:
  • Pass appropriate ancillary modules under the supervision of internal and external assessors.
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of Diagnostic Imaging by passing written, oral and practical examinations under the supervision of internal and external assessors.
  • Complete a literature study that is up-to-date and relevant to the research topic.
  • Critically evaluate the literature in light of current understanding.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:
  • Take responsibility and evaluate clinical cases within accepted professional norms.
  • Communicate with learners, colleagues and owners to ensure optimal welfare of patients.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5:
  • Demonstrate the ability to debate, perform and apply techniques reported in relevant, appropriate and current literature.

    Integrated Assessment:
