PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

The purpose of the Diploma is to provide best practice knowledge in systems development, technology, project management and strategic use of information technology as applied to distributed commercial information systems. Students will develop critical reading and writing skills and be prepared for study towards higher degrees.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

A Bachelor's Degree or demonstrated competencies in the area of Information Technology.

Senior certificate with matriculation exemptin or equivalent university admission qualification.

First degree.
Any Bachelors degree.

Recognition of prior learning:

The University is prepared to test candidates wishing to enter through non-traditional meas, to estalbish whether, in the opinion of Senate, the person is prepared for studies at this diploma level in which case an application will be made for conditional exemption.

a) The Postgraduate Diploma graduate is competent to:

Apply appropriate information technology to a variety of organisation situations;

Analyse and interpret the marketing process considering current trends in the South African context;

Formulate a marketing strategy that supports the objectives of an organisation using the marketing concept, target marketing and the marketing mix.

The holder of a Post-graduate diploma in a Commerce will:

Have attained a level of knowledge and understanding of the relevant discipline equivalent to that of a student who has studies the subject for three years in the course of completing a 360-credit Bachelor's degree.

Have mastered items of theoretical knowledge of specific relevance to the commercial activity being prepared for.

Have acquired an understanding of the role of initiative and entrepreneurship in the relevant area of commercial activity

Be qualified in terms of professional expertise to work in an entry level managerial post in the relevant industry or profession;

Have developed personal skills and work habits appropriate to working in a team

Have internalised the norms of conduct relevant to the profession for which the diploma is a preparation.

(c) Specific Outcomes, (including professional outcomes, contextually demonstrated)

Approaches to various types of systems including Informational/Knowledge based, Group support, Dynamic Database Driven, Transaction Processing and E-Commerce

(i) read, critically understand and integrate technical, organisational, management and behavioural data and reports relevant to the field of IS;

(ii) produce descriptive, prescriptive and analytical reports at a level o f sophistication suitable to:

internal office reports in response to clearly assigned criteria;

memos of professional advice

a working paper or first cut of a publishable journal article

(iii) appreciate the significance of IS-related data, reports and analyses to the business and wider communities, so as to be competent to:

(iv) evaluate the commercial, social and other implications of IS developments, policies and actions to the level of sophistication identified in (c)(ii) above;

(v) appreciate the significance of IS-related data, reports and analyses to the maintenance of the ethics and values of communities, individuals and professional associations, so as to be competent to:

(vi) evaluate the ethical implications of IS developments, policies and actions to the level of sophistication identified in (c) (ii) above;

(vii) understand, and communicate understanding of, the influence of technical, behavioural, managerial, organisational and ethical dynamics on local and international IS activities;

(viii) research the literature on a specialised IS topic, write a report of the standard identified in (c)(ii) above

(ix) verbally and visually present and demonstrate computer systems and user requirements to meetings, as required in the IS industry;

(x) use information technology and applied problem-solving skills to analyse users 'IS requirements, design solutions to these, and write appropriate programs

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

a) The Learner's achievement of critical cross-field outcomes is assessed formatively during the course through a range of activities, and summatively in the capstone activity outlined under 6 below.

b) The Learner's achievement of general programme outcomes is assessed through a range of formative and summative assessments throughout the course, and particularly in the capstone activity outlined under 6 below.

The successful candidate for a post-graduate diploma in a Commerce will:

Pass relevant undergraduate courses

Undertake case studies in the relevant field of commercial activity

Successfully complete practical tasks, which require the mastery of skills identified by employers as important for managers in their industry.

Participate successfully in team projects that require a capacity to work cooperatively with others

Successfully complete work that requires the ability think independently and demonstrate initiative in practical problem solving.

Be able to participate in discussion of normative issues in relation to the relevant industry or profession.

c) Assessments include theoretical papers, practical reports, oral presentations and research projects. Formative assessment includes the preparation of short and long papers. Summative assessment takes the form of individual and team research projects (see section 6).

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT

Students submit a team project, two team written papers and two individual papers and writes an examinates integrating the various aspects of distributed commercial information systems, designed to constitute both a formative and summative assessment exercise, for which they need to achieve a passing grade. They are
required to reflect creatively on some of the current, real life problems which they have encountered in the course of their exposure to the industry or profession for which their course is preparing them.
