PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Overall competency:

The learner will be competent in:
  • providing therapeutic and developmental social work services,
  • utilising the South African social service system in service delivery, and
  • fulfilling the various social work roles that are required by the SA Council for Social Service Professions.


    Motivation for the program:

    A five-year strategic plan of action for the reconstruction and rationalisation of the social welfare delivery system was adopted in 1997 in terms of the White paper for social Welfare. According to this policy statement a holistic, developmental approach was adopted whereby services to individuals, families, groups and communities have to be rendered on a multi-professional level. Specially trained personnel such as social workers are needed for this purpose. In addition, the strategic plan also emphasised the importance of upgrading the qualifications of existing registered social workers.


    Professional role:
  • The training is of such a nature and standard that the learner will comply with the requirements for registration as a social worker with the SA Council for Social Service Professions.


    Nature of qualification:
  • An academic, career-orientated qualification.

    Entrance requirements:
  • NQF Level 6, three year Baccalaureate degree in Social Work or a BA degree with social work as one of the major subjects, as well as
  • registration as a social worker with the SA Council for Social Service Professions.

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The learner should by way of written, oral and practice functioning provide evidence of his/her capabilities to:
  • function professionally in generic social work practice, which includes:
  • analysing and assessing situations,
  • conceptualising and planning his/her interventions,
  • implementing and managing these interventions on a continuous basis,
  • evaluating the results of the interventions and the social work process that was followed, and
  • eventually terminate the intervention and process.


    Integrated assessment:

    Assessment will be continuous and integrated, using a range of formative and summative methods according to the PU for CHE`s assessment policy. It will cover the following:

    Course unit marks is arrived at through:
  • written assignments,
  • written and oral tests,
  • individual supervision sessions,
  • written and oral exams,
  • a research report, and
  • casework, groupwork and community work projects.

    The following quality assurance procedures are part of the qualification`s, overall evaluation and accreditation system:
  • external examiners
  • SAQA accreditation, and
  • a moderator for each of the study units` content and presentation. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Vertical:

    The qualification provides access to master`s level studies at all South African universities, as well as various training institutions abroad.


    Horizontal:

    No specific articulation to other qualifications. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The following moderation options and quality control measures will be utilised:
  • internal examiners that possess at least a NQF level 7 BA (Social Work) degree, and be registered with the SA Council for Social Service Professions as a social worker,
  • the degree complies with the requirements and guidelines set by the quality control mechanisms of the University,
  • accreditation of the qualification with the SA Council for Social Service professions, and
  • requirements and guidelines of the quality control body like the NSB 09 and the ETQA. 

  • CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Assessors must:
  • possess at least a NQF level 7 BA (Social Work) degree, and
  • be registered with the SA Council for Social Service Professions as a social worker. 

  • REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006. 

    NOTES 
    The outcomes of this qualification is in many respects the same as those of the BA (Social Work) degree. It was especially introduced to meet the needs of learners who, prior to 1985, completed the then three year social work degree, but currently wish to meet the minimum requirements set by the SA Council for Social Service Professions. The qualification therefore provides an articulation possibility to those learners who possess a three-year social work degree.
