PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

To provide candidates in the private, public and voluntary sectors with advanced core knowledge and research skills relevant to the technical aspects of Economics and its applied branches in order to promote susainable growth and development and maximise prosperity in all sectors of the economy and society.

To develop competent leaders in the private, public and voluntary sectors with applied fundamental and cross functional technical knowledge and skills to steer sustainable development, growth and prosperity in the most appropriate direction.

To provide students who want to enrol for more specialised studies in Economics with a sound academic base from which to do so.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

1. The assessment used for this qualification ensures that the purpose of the qualification is achieved.

2. A range of formative and summative assessment methods such as simulations, assignments, workplace assessments, econometric forecasts, written and oral presentations, tests and examinations are used.

3. The required range of modalities is used integratively to assess whether the specified outcomes have been achieved.

4. From the assessment of samples generalising to a domain takes place in a judicious and planned way in order to ensure reliability

5. The assessment used meets the standard and level of achievement for NQF level 7

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT

Integrated assessment takes place by way of a variety of procedures including practically orientated cross-disciplinary individual and group assignments, simulations, workplace assessments, written and oral presentations, tests and examinations

Other articulation possibilities, either generic or specific:

For the BComm Hons degree: Horizontal articulation with other level 7 programmes in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences or other faculties is enhanced by the elective credits at each level.
Vertical articulation into a MComm in the different sub-disciplines of the management sciences is common as at the university of Stellenbosch and students can also proceed to such programmes at most universities in South Africa or internationally

The university of Stellenbosch has a system of external peer review and evaluation of departments. One of the aspects of the system is an evaluation of the standards and assessment practices of the department.
