PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
This Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE) qualification is intended for candidates seeking a further teaching qualification specialising in Hotelkeeping and Catering. The purpose of the qualification is to introduce educators, developers, teachers and trainers to a new specialised field, namely Hotelkeeping and Catering. This qualification is aimed specifically at providing the candidates with competencies (knowledge and skills) enabling them to teach and train in the field of Hotelkeeping and Catering. Therefore the candidate holding this qualification will have the competencies (knowledge and skills) to:
  • teach specialist subjects in the field of Hotelkeeping and Catering thereby implementing outcome-based education in this field for grades 8-12
  • teach/act as facilitators, trainers and assessors in other Higher Education and Training (HET) institutions or other sectors of the Hospitality industry, e.g. WE (Workplace Education) where 6000 learnerships were granted for the year 2000, as well as specialised teaching in the Further Education and Training Field.

    Justification:
Since 1994 the demand for hospitality services in South Africa has increased dramatically; to such an extent that it has been introduced into schools as a full-blown subject.

In Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West and the Northern Province the number of schools offering Hotelkeeping and Catering has increased from ONE in the late 1980's to +/- 80 in 1998. On a National basis almost 200 schools offer the subject in 1999 and this number is constantly increasing.

The majority of existing Hotelkeeping and Catering teachers have no specialized training due to a serious lack of training facilities.

Furthermore the Business Trust Tourism Learnership Project (TLP) will over the next four years deliver 5000 learnerships among the unemployed and 10 000 among the employed to develop a pool of skilled people for the Hospitality Industry. This project creates perfect career opportunities for trained people in the field of Hotelkeeping and Catering that preside over the competencies of training, facilitating and assessing
