PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The degree provides the opportunity for a candidate to undertake independent research and advanced study under the guidance of a supervisor, building on knowledge gained, in a particular subject area, normally at Masters or equivalent level. The thesis presented must constitute a substantial contribution to knowledge in the chosen subject and may embody only the original work of the candidate

A recognised Masters degree or a recognise Honours Bachelor's degree or a recognised four year Bachelors degree plus at least one year registration for an approved Masters degree or a recognised three year Bachelors degree plus at least one year registration for an approved Masters degree or a recognised three year Bachelors degree plus at least two years registration for an approved Masters degree or any equivalent qualification recognised by the Senate as being equivalent.

  • Be capable of understanding further academic study and research independently and without supervision.
  • Have sufficient expertise in the discipline to be able to teach it at all levels including the supervision of the research students
  • Understand and be sympathetic to what is meant by such concepts as the "disinterested pursuit of truth, "and the love of learning for its own sake"

    (i). Familiar with leading issues in their specialised field of study;
    (ii). Able to conduct advanced literature searches and critique current literature in the form of a review;

    (v). Able to provide technical reports to professional audiences including governments and businesses

    Integrated assessment:

    The Doctoral Thesis constitutes the work on the basis of which a PhD is awarded. This thesis is expected to contain material which is either worthy of publication as a monograph or capable of yielding two academic articles in peer-reviewed scholarly journals.

    The thesis must be an original, coherent and consistent body of work which reflects the candidate's own efforts, performed under the guidance of a suitably qualified supervisor or supervisors.
