PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with:

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A potential learner should demonstrate the following competencies:
  • The ability to write academic texts;
  • The ability to write a research proposal and report;
  • The ability to orally present and defend an argument that is supported by evidence;
  • The ability to engage with and critique the ideas of his/her peers in a constructive manner;
  • The ability to design, pla and execute research tasks on theoretical frameworks on an intermediate level, to reflect on his/her own research and to report on research findings
  • The ability to search for access, and interpret information on an intermediate level
  • The ability to use various information and communication technologies in an academic environmnet

    A potential learner should be in possession of an Honours degree in Public Administration, and/or experience in an institution which is considered relevant and sufficient by the Department of Politics and Governance in accordance with Faculty of Arts regulations on the recognition of prior learning.

    Recognition of prior learning:

    Current competence in the field of public administration that has been acquired by prior learning through applicable and relevant qualifications and experience will be assessed according to the regulations of the Faculty of Arts. Such competence may provide access to a Master's programme in Public Administration. Status recognition on the basis of relevant prior learning will not entitle the learner to receive a formal qualification without following the required MA programme in Public Administration at RAU.

    Formative assessment practices that will be implemented:

    Learners must present their research proposals in seminar form to a full meeting of teachers in the Department. Learners also conduct their research and writing under close supervision so as to assess their progress on a continuous basis.

    Summative assessment practices that will be implemented:

    Learners are subjected to written examinations in the case of structured M. Admin programmes, while mini-dissertations as well as full-length dissertations re formally examined.

    Appropriate external examiners are nominated by the Department and confirmed by the Arts Faculty and thereafter formally appointed.

    Between one and four, chosen from other tertiary institutions, for a structured M. Admin programme, and one for a dissertation-based M. Admin.

    Academic qualifications in the discipline of Politics: an M. Admin or equivalent in Public Administration or a related field; relevant teaching experience in the discipline of Public Administration or a related discipline.
