PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
The purpose is to provide students who have the potential to succeed, but who, at the point of entry into University, have Matriculation symbols which are below the normal acceptance level, or who have no matriculation certificate with and alternative access route which will provide them with the necessary foundation for their chosen field(s) of study. |

On exiting, students will be able to:
1. Participate in tutorial discussions; 2. Understand what is required in written assignments, 3. Write paragraphs in English to an acceptable grammatical level; 4. Combine insights from history, environmental geography and economics to understand something of his/her context as a person living in South Africa; 5. Demonstrate a basic understanding of maps, graphs, ratios, proportions and other numeric and visual concepts; 6. Use computers, word-processing and simple spreadsheets. On obtaining the qualification students will be able to enter higher education degree programmes, offered through the medium of English, in Arts and Social Science and to succeed in their studies. |
ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
The assessment criteria applied are derived directly form the outcomes, assessed through a combination of assignments, portfolios and examinations.
Integrated assessment appropriately incorportate to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved: Candidates will demonstrate their ability and proficiency in each of the learning outcomes. These are assessed in an integrated manner by assignments, tutorials, oral presentations and examinations. |

Modules offered in this programme can be taken by students in other access programmes in this and other higher-education institutions. |
MODERATION OPTIONS |
All assessments are second-examined by suitable qualified external examiners. |
CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS |
At present, assessors are not registered, but all academic staff members teaching on the programme are considered to be qualified to do so by virtue of their appointment to the academic posts concerned. |
