PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To expose students to contemporary developments in the discipline of information systems and technology. To enable graduates to contribute to the strategic and tactical use of information in large corporations. To build a foundation for further studies in information systems and technology. To help students to develop the skills to share knowledge. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Students enrolling on this programme will be equipped to hold a Further Educational Certificate (Matric Equivalent), and have obtained a minimum of 40 matric points, plus at least a D in Mathematics at the higher grade.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Demonstrate:
  • The ability to conduct and present, in the field of information systems and technology, valid academic research.
  • The ability to present academically sound arguments (in discussion, formal presentations and examination conditions).
  • The ability to evaluate/analyze standpoints on current key information systems and technology issues.

    Integrated assessment:

    The University of Natal is currently reforming its assessment strategies to include the assessment of applied competence for each qualification. In the meantime, a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations serve to assess the integration of all/most of the learning outcomes for each module in a qualification.
    A total of 20% of the credit points at level 6 are assigned to a major project during which students (working in teams) are required to develop and implement a computer-based information system which meets specific user requirements. This project pulls together all that the student will have learnt in the discipline of information systems and technology and much of what will have been covered an the supporting courses in the field of management studies.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    No opportunity is provided for accelerated progress through the programme. The programme can be entered at any level provided the student involved has the appropriate credits from the previous level. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The ETQA system for HE is not yet fully developed. Until such time as it is, procedures described under Assessor Criteria will suffice. All work, which contributes towards a student's marks for the programme is assessed by the staff members (or other persons appointed by the University), and overall, at least 75% of this work is moderated by external examiners. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Until the HEQC establishes a registration system for assessors in the HET Band, the University of Natal assumes that, on the basis of its rigorous selection criteria for the appointment of academic staff (who also have opportunities for staff development in assessment), staffs are competent to assess students on the modules they teach. This assessment is quality assured via a university system of internal moderation and external examination. External examiners are appointed for their teaching and disciplinary expertise and subject to the approval of Faculty Boards. The University of Natal ruling is that 66 % of all assessments at exit level, i.e. leading to a qualification, are externally examined. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
