PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The aim of the MA in Creative Writing is to foster promising writers by offering a two-year programme of supervision during which they complete a manuscript. Genres supervised include the novel, short story, drama, poetry and screenplay. The programme can be taken in English, Afrikaans, French or German.

A degree of Honours bachelor or its equivalent, in the discipline or a cognate discipline recognised by the Faculty.

People who have shown by examination or publication or a record of appropriate training that they have reached a level in the subject or a cognate subject equivalent to an honours degree may be permitted to register for the degree.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    (a) The achievement of these outcomes is assessed in the integrated assessment of the programme.

    Formative assessment takes place through regular meetings with the supervisor and a series of writers' workshops during which the work in progress is subject to peer review.

    Summative assessment takes place through the examination of the final manuscript.

    The integrative assessment of the MA in Creative writing is effected through the examination of the final manuscript. The manuscript should be of professionally accepted book length and should demonstrate the following:

    * Development of an individual style
    * Potential for publication
    * An awareness the writer's context within the cultural dynamics of South African writing
    * An awareness of the writer's literary forebears
    * A capacity to refresh the language
