| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| 1. To equip students with the knowledge, awareness and understanding of both natural and human-made hazards and disasters, and to enrich them with community-based strategic planning skills for minimizing the severity of hazard impact.
2. To develop the capacity for analysing wide-ranging data and information for facilitating a comprehensive, integrated and effective disaster management. 3. To demonstrate the importance of the operational activities relating to disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, recovery and rehabilitation at all societal levels, and to enhance the communication skills for operationalizing those activities. Considering that disaster management covers a wide-ranging field of learning, vital cross-field outcomes will arise from this dedicated training programme through the systematic adoption of existing entry routes in closely related areas of studies within the School of Environmental Sciences; Critical elements are already emphasized by School programmes which promote planning, geographic, hydrologic, geologic and environmental/resource management capabilities. Important cross-cutting outputs will also arise from student interaction with the wide spectrum of disaster management stakeholders, including community-based and non-governmental organizations, local and provincial government, and the business community. |

| 1. A Bachelor `s degree of the University of Venda in any of the following areas: Environmental Sciences, Environmental Management, Urban and Regional Planning, and Earth Sciences.
2. Qualifications from recognized tertiary institutions equivalent to those in above, especially with relevance to climatological, hydrological and geological studies. 3. A Diploma in an appropriate area of study plus prior learning experience considered by the School of Environmental Sciences as relevant to Disaster Management. |
