PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

The (first) purpose of the qualification is to provide possessors with an integrated and effective post graduate-level base of knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in the field of project management, whether in the private or public sector.

The (second) purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa with high-level postgraduates able to actively participate in the construction industry.

Learning outcomes:
The student will have:

the ability to practice as a construction professional and/or practitioner in the field of project management;

the ability to enhance the construction industry of the country

the required background to undertake independent research on doctoral level.

Critical cross-field outcomes:

identify, analyse, develop and manage construction projects;

work effectively in multidisciplinary professional teams and community structures;

organise and manage his/her own activities responsibly and effectively;

collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate socio-economic, legal, financial, physical and marketing information applicable to construction projects;

communicate effectively using visual, mathematical and language skills in oral and written persuasion;

manage the implementation of building technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment;

undertake and manage construction projects with due regard to the built environment as a sub-system of the socio-economic and physical world;

apply entrepreneurial skills in the development of the built environment

undertake independent research on any of the above.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Mastery of the knowledge, skills and research capabilities required is demonstrated by the submission of a thesis on an approved topic. The learner must show evidence that he/she is capable of planning, implementing and executing a scientific investigation in the chosen field of specialisation.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

Qualifications required:
Preferably a M Sc degree (but at least a Bachelor's degree) in a related field such as the built environment or commerce.

Career experience required:
A minimum of 5 years (preferably 10 years) relevant experience as property professional
