Integrated Assessment: The core module - architecture design and technology - functions as the assessment integrator within each semester of study as tasks are routinely set which require drawing from the other modules. Individual cumulative portfolios of design work are used to assess the success of this method. Secondly, two comprehensive reviews are held at the end of Semesters Three and Six (see Section 12) where ALL the individual student's work from the previous semesters are reviewed against a published set of criteria drawn from all the modules. In the first two semesters of study, the core module - Architectural Design and Urbanism - functions as the assessment integrator within the semester of study as tasks are routinely set which require drawing from the other modules. Individual cumulative portfolios of design work are used to assess the success of this method. Secondly, the two final semesters have in both the Simulated Office Project and the Design Dissertation, two "capstone" modules designed to integrate knowledge and skills gained elsewhere. |
| ARTICULATION OPTIONS |
| At present, learners can only exit at graduation but the possibility exists to exit with a certifacate at the end of Semester Three.
Graduates can transfer to the one-year BTech programme in Architecture at the Technikons. Learners witin the programme can transfer to B.A.S. programme at other S.A. Universities. There is limited portability and flexibility. Learners could transfer in or out to a similar programme however there are no entrance or exit points. Modules from Construction Management and Quantity Surveying are cross-listed. The nature of the programme does not lend itself to accelerated progress. |
| MODERATION OPTIONS |
| All design portfolios are given a summative assessment by an internal panel chaired by the Unit Manager (Co-Ordinator). All borderline work is subject to review by external examiners. All students have the right to an interview with the external examiners. All other work follows a similar process. Finally, all sets of marks are reviewed at a staff meeting chaired by the Programme Director before being submitted to the Board of Examiners. The qualification is subject to accreditation procedures from a visiting board of The S.A. Council of Architects, the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Commonwealth Association of Architects. At the end of the first two semesters, all design portfolios are given a summative assessment by an internal panel chaired by the Unit Manager (Co-Ordinator). All other work is subject to review by external examiners. The Simulated Office Project and the Design Dissertation is subject to oral examination and summative assessment by a panel of internal and external examiners. Finally, all sets of marks are reviewed at a staff meeting chaired by the Programme Director. The qualification subject to professional accreditation by The S.A. Council for Architects, the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Commonwealth Association of Architects. |
| CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS |
| Until the HEQC establishes a registration system for assessors in the HET Band, the University of Natal assumes that, on the basis of its rigorous selection criteria for the appointment of academic staff (who also have opportunities for staff development in assessment), staff are competent to assess students on the modules they teach. This assessment is quality assured via a university system of internal moderation and external examination. External examiners are appointed for their teaching and disciplinary expertise and subject to the approval of Faculty Boards. The University of Natal ruling is that 66% of all assessments at exit level, i.e. leading to a qualification are externally examined. |

| PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS QUALIFICATION: |
| This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
