The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
  • A learner who achieves qualifications in this qualification will be a competent reader, writer and speaker in Afrikaans.
  • A learner will acquire the ability to understand in what ways language can be a tool of oppression/liberation in the broader South African context and beyond.
  • A learner will acquire the ability to do further research in the field of literature and linguistics.

    B.A. Degree with Afrikaans as one of the majors or any other equivalent qualification.

    Entry Requirements:
    The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Bachelor of Arts in Afrikaans Language Acquisition, NQF Level 7.

    Specific outcomes:
    A Bachelor of Arts Honours (Afrikaans) learner will be able to:
    1. Demonstrate his/her drawing on a wide range of theoretical and practical skills derived from literature and linguistics.
    2. Have knowledge of the major literary/linguistic discipline with depth in more than one area.
    3. Have limited specialisation in a given literary direction.
    4. Conduct basic research across a major discipline in linguistic or literature.

    1. Generate contextually relevant interpretations of literary texts by using recognised hermeneutic methods;
  • Use secondary resources to interpret texts in a way relevant to the broader social context;
  • Explain the cultural and social features of the communities behind texts and identify the differences between those;
  • and contemporary communities, where necessary;
  • Use historical sources to interpret the history of interpretation in their respective contexts.
    2. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge in a specific area of Afrikaans language and literature;
    3. Research and prepare extended essays;
    4. Ability to use various research resources to formulate a problem-statement or hypothesis and to validate that in an academically appropriate way;

    1. Ability to identify socially-empowering perspectives in a wide range of Afrikaans literature;
    2. Analyse information regarding literature and linguistics in its social context;
