PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of this research qualification is to provide qualified learners with the competencies to plan, execute and write up scientific research in the urban and regional planning field.

Government and private sector investment in infrastructure has necessitated research into town and regional planning. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed the learner will be in possession of a Bachelors degree in Town and Regional Planning, (B (T&RP), B Art et. Scientiae or equivalent qualification. An Honours degree in a related field or professional degree or masters degree in a related field will also guarantee acceptance to this qualification.

Recognition of Prior Learning

It may be required of candidates without a B(T&RP) degree to require relevant exit level outcomes during their first year of M(T&RP) in order to articulate.

The qualifying learner will:

1. Undertake research related to the field of urban and regional planning.
2. Produce a research dissertation and an academic article for publication related to the field of urban and regional planning. 

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
The qualifying graduate will:

  • Demonstrate the ability to design and plan scientific research.
  • Demonstrate the skills to execute innovative scientific research related to the field of urban and regional planning.
  • Display the ability to undertake research independently.
  • Demonstrate the ability to make use of information technology in the various phases of the research processes.
  • Demonstrate deepened understanding and knowledge of the theories, philosophies and practice of the specific sub-field in which research is undertaken.

    Integrated Assessment

    Assessment is based on assessment through oral communication as well as a research dissertation. This is to assess the learner's ability to plan, structure, conceptualise and execute a scientific research process and report the findings thereof, as well as the knowledge and understanding of the specific field of research and the ability to make deductions from the research and relate them back to the discipline.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification serves as an entry point to B (T&RP) and B Art et. Scientiae. Other equivalent qualifications and honours or masters degrees in related fields also serve as an entry point to the related qualification. The qualification provides credits for a PhD in the relevant subject area. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Both internal and external assessors are used and the learner is assessed on the written dissertation and article, as well as through an oral assessment. External assessors are chosen on academic qualification and relevant experience in practice in order to ensure reliable and valid assessment. The research proposal has to be approved by the Research Unit in the School for the Built Environment and the title of the dissertation by the Faculty. The oral assessment is attended by other senior members from the Faculty. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    A NQF Level 8 Research Masters Degree in Town and Regional Planning and/or a Doctorate in Town and Regional Planning is required, as well as the following career experience:
  • Relevant academic and/or research experience in the field of urban and regional planning and development.
  • Relevant professional practice experience and expertise in particular fields of urban and regional planning and development.

    External assessors must be approved by Faculty.
