PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of this postgraduate qualification is to grant official academic recognition based on published work submitted by the candidate in one or more fields of engineering.

In this way South Africa will have significant numbers of PhD graduates in the field of Engineering so as to ensure that the numbers of local leadership is broadened and innovative, knowledge-based scholarly activity is widened. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed the learner will be in possession of a Bachelor of Engineering, recognised by the university.

Recognition of prior learning:

It may be required of candidates not in possession of a Bachelor of Engineering to pass supplementary courses before enrolling for the PhD qualification.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Once this qualification has been achieved, the learner can proceed to post-Doctoral research. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The faculty board officially appoints an examination commission, consisting of an appropriate internal examiner and two external examiners from outside this institution who have international recognition in the field of the study. There is frequent national and international departmental evaluation, national and international peer review of publications and national and international external evaluation. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    In line with the requirements set by the University of Pretoria, assessors must be in possession of a PhD in a related Engineering field. Appropriate experience as judged by the head of the department and the dean of the faculty is also required.
