PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

A qualified learner is competent in his/her selected field of specialisation within the minerals industry and can be employed as a specialist in this field.

Continue with formal or non-formal research in the selected field of study to the benefit of the company and the minerals industry.

Be part of the production team in the minerals industry in his/her selected field of specialisation.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The qualified learner should provide evidence of his/her competency in:

1. Knowledge:

Applying the knowledge obtained in the ND and NHD in a systematic, orderly and logically way in dealing with the selected project.

Investigating and solving problems encountered with the project.

Obtain new knowledge pertaining to the project through self-study and from questioning his/her appointed tutors/supervisors.

2. Operational skills:

Skills such as, but not limited to it, improving general computer skills and specialist software applications applicable to the field of study.

Using of the latest technology where applicable in the selected field of study.

3. Managing skills:

Managing of a research project and any resources that may have been allocated for it.

Integrated assessment:

A thesis to be completed by the candidate and to be examined, which may include an interview, by two external specialist in the selected field of study.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

Articulates horizontally with:

Applicable degree at university related to the chosen field of study.

Leading to a qualification at NQF level 8 (D-Tech):

Doctorate in Technology: Engineering (formerly lauretus in technology: Engineering)

PhD Mineral resource management at Wits University.

MODERATION OPTIONS

The thesis to be marked seperately by two examiners.

While South Africa still had Technikons, all of their qualifications were registered under the Committee of Technikon Principals. After the Technikons became Universities of Technology or merged with Universities, the qualifications were registered under each of these institutions, and the CTP qualifications fell away (hence the end date of 2006, above). Where relevant, replacement information is
shown in the table above.
