PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

Latin as an academic discipline promotes recognition of the interconnectedness of human culture. It emphasises the need to adopt a wide variety of learning and research strategies across established disciplinary boundaries to build up as complete a picture as possible when not all the relevant material is extant. The skills and perceptions acquired through the study of Latin are widely applicable in all employment categories, particularly in those related to human interaction. The study of the many aspects of ancient culture that have contributed markedly and directly to western culture enables South Africans to participate fully in the international arena on an equal footing with educated citizens of other western-style nations.

Translate texts of a variety of genres from the original language into idiomatic English, and to perceive the necessity to understand all allusions (e.g. philosophical, historical, mythological, geographical and inter-textual);

Demonstrate extensive familiarity with information technology, and the ability to make use of the Internet in seeking information.

Identify and analyse primary material (textual and/or archaeological) that is relevant to a stated area of study, and appropriately synthesise information derived from it;

Identify and read critically major secondary materials relevant to the stated area of study;

Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved:

Learners are assessed through a combination of methods including (as may be appropriate) class work (such as oral and written assignments for individuals and groups, portfolios), oral and written examination, and dissertation, in accordance with the rules pertaining to the modules and level at which they are studying. All outcome levels follow a process of in-class assessment (in some modules, continuous assessment), and examinations are conducted on the completion of each module. At the MA outcome level, students are required to complete a dissertation or a thesis.

The various methods of assessment in the Ancient Greek programme are designed to evaluate students' knowledge, skills and values. Class work is assessed through continuous assessment where relevant and desirable, and evaluates students' progress as well as their continued commitment to the programme and its purpose. In language studies, class work tests students' growing ability to comprehend and contextualise original texts, and to construct meaning as a result; in Ancient Greek studies, class work tests students' growing understanding of the complex interrelationships between various forms of cultural expression in their advancing study of Ancient Greek. The research dissertation or thesis tests students' ability to integrate and contextualise information, conduct research, and present a structured and cohesive report that is comprehensive but without irrelevant material.

Horizontal - Within the University: with the approval of the programme directors, modules from other approved disciplines may be incorporated into this qualification and modules from this discipline may be incorporated into other approved qualifications.

MODERATION OPTIONS

The moderations procedures are in accordance with the requirements and rules of the Faculty of Human Sciences. The programme makes use of both internal and external assessors/examiners, and at the graduate levels external assessors/examiners are external to the University of Natal, and are recognised experts in the relevant fields; at the MA level external examiners are customarily internationally recognised scholars external to South Africa.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

Until the HEQC establishes a registration system for assessors in the HET Band, the University of Natal assumes that, on the basis of its rigorous selection criteria for the appointment of academic staff (who also have opportunities for staff development in assessment), staff are competent to assess students on the modules they teach. This assessment is quality assured via a university system of internal moderation and external examination. External examiners are appointed for their teaching and disciplinary expertise and subject to the approval of faculty Boards. The University of Natal ruling is that 66 % of all assessments at exit level, i.e. leading to qualifications are externally examined.
