PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
  • Equip the learner with a legal qualification which will enable him/her to enter the public sector as a prosecutor, magistrate, or departmental legal adviser; or the private sector as a legal adviser in a corporation or private institution.
  • Provide the learner with legal knowledge, competence and skills which will allow him/her the opportunity for both personal and intellectual growth as well as an opportunity for gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society
  • Provide the learner with a knowledge and understanding of the philosophy of law and the values of democratic governance, constitutionalism, the rule of law and respect for human rights

    To be admitted to the LLB degree the learner must be in possession of a bachelor's degree.

    The LLB qualifier:

    1. Understands substantive and procedural concepts, principles and rules of the South African legal system

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    A comprehensive range of assessment criteria will be used to determine leraner achievement. The overall criteria will include, but will not be limited to:

    1. Mastery of prescribed subject matter

    2. The ability to analyse a problem and to apply relevant legal concepts or principles to such a problem

    3. The development of verbal and writing communication skills

    4. Critical evaluation of literature in the field

    5. Development and application of research skills

    6. The inculcation of ethical and professional responsibility


    INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT


    Continuous assessment strategies will be employed, making use of multiple assessment to evaluate the learner and which will include but not limited to:
    Regular tests, written assignments, and oral presentations.

    Summative assessment will take the form of examinations. A detailed record and monitoring of learner progress will be maintained. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Vertical articulation

    There is scope for articulation of the programme both internally and externally as well as vertically and horizontally. Internally the student may move vertically by undertaking an LLM or doctoral degree, and horizontally by transferring credits to programmes in economic and management sciences.
    Externally the programme offers potential for articulation with similar programmes offered at other universities in the country, as well as LLM and doctoral programmes at national and international universities. The programme allows vertical articulation by enabling qualifiers entry into the legal profession as regulated by the Law Society and Bar association. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The moderation of the programme will be undertaken by the Faculty Board, the Senate and the Council of the University. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Internal assessors will be lectures in Vista's Law Faculty. They will be appointed on the basis of their expertise in the modules that they are teaching and are required to assess. External assessors will comprise of academics teaching the same modules at other universities or legal practitioners who are recognised as having expertise in the relevant field.

    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
