PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

1. To empower students with skills to integrate knowledge of concepts, structures, procedures, models, theories, principles and research methodology in a way which will enable them to competently apply the skills required in the economic and business environment of the new millennium.

2. To enhance the employability of the graduate with a specialised knowledge of a particular part of the economic and business environment.

3. To create the opportunity for the students to continue to intensify his/her specialisation in a specific field of study in order to provide the basis for advanced post graduate studies.

4. To provide South Africa with graduates who are competent in pursing practical and rewarding careers nationally and globally in the economic and business environment as well as in the public sector.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

1. A B.-degree at NQF level 6 with an average of 60% on level 6 in the discipline he/she wants to specialise in.

2. At least 128 credits acquired in the discipline of specialisation.

Recognition of prior learning

Prospective students who do not meet these formal requirements may be considered by the Committee for Acknowledgement of Prior Learning on the basis of entry examinations, portfolios, interviews and/or tests which seek to identify appropriate knowledge, experience obtained in the workplace, skills and values.

Any credits earned on relevant levels, obtained at other tertiary education institutions, will be evaluated by the Committee for Acknowledgement of Prior Learning.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

1. Honours graduates should provide evidence of advanced competencies, insight, knowledge and skills via a range of formative and summative assessment methods, such as portfolios simulations, case studies, workplace assessments, written and oral test and examinations.

2. By completing his/her mini dissertation and communicating the research results, the learners will demonstrate problem solving, self-discipline, commitment, research and communicating skills as well as Technology literacy.

3. By required reports on general as well as specific subject related topics, learners will demonstrate their activity interest in their study-field by continued exposure to business journals and magazines as well as the daily business press, in order to maintain competence, identify best practice and keeping abreast of the changing economic environment.

4. Through group discussions, the learners will provide evidence of their values and personal paradigms as responsible citizens, respect for Gods creation, authority and sensitivity to the socio-economics problems of the multi-cultural world.

Integrated assessment:

During the course of study, the progress of the learner is assessed by a variety of appropriate formative and summative methods, to supply evidence that the purposes of the qualifications as a whole have been achieved, by means of:

Written and oral tests and examinations;

Continuous assessment via practical group and class assignments;

Case studies;

Practical, individual and syndicate projects;

Verbal presentations;

Mini dissertation (limited scope).

INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY

B.Com Honours graduates with above average marks enjoy ready access and recognition of their status in to universities globally. The result of international peer evaluation of research in our focus area of specialisation, reflects in the contents of applicable modules. Several agreements with European and American Universities exist in order to promote researchers and student exchange programmes.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

1. The Honours B.Com graduate articulates vertically give access to senior post-graduate studies, specifically the Masters degree according to his/her field of specialisation.

2. The Honours B.Com Qualification prepares the graduate for a career in the local and global economic and business environment.

3. It provides the student with access to related studies at other institutions of higher education.

MODERATION OPTIONS

1. Internally the process goes through three stages. The internal examiner gives a mark which is based on the different forms of integrated assessment. In the second stage a committee of the particular School takes responsibility for moderation and finally the faculty examination committee reviews the student's performance across courses and compare results to years of study, progress and total credits already earned (according to the rules and regulations of the university and the faculty).

2. Externally NSB moderation in terms of NSB requirements.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

1. All internal assessors are members of the academic staff of the Potchefstroom University for CHE and received training through the compulsory New Lectures programme. The minimum qualifications of assessors is an appropriate M.Com / MSc / MA - degree.

2. All external assessors are senior colleagues in the relevant field of study of other South African Universities or are leading practitioners in their field study.

As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
