A learner accredited with this qualification will be competent to operate efficiently, independently and professionally in a media environment as a specialist journalist, editor or media manager producing critical social, political and economic reportage.

Contextualisation of issues is central to the creation and development of creative media products and requires the application of problem identification and in raising these issues to the level of public debate the journalist facilitates problem solving at a societal level Learners are made aware of the transforming aspects of careers in this field and of the need for entrepreneurial skills development and attitudes, as well as ongoing learning to remain employable and keep abreast of market developments. Learners are encouraged to explore diverse career opportunities in the communication and media field

    While South Africa still had Technikons, all of their qualifications were registered under the Committee of Technikon Principals. After the Technikons became Universities of Technology or merged with Universities, the qualifications were registered under each of these institutions, and the CTP qualifications fell away (hence the end date of 2006, above).
