  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The policy for RPL and CAT aims to provide access to eta qualifications through the recognition of prior learning and the transfer of achieved credits (CAT). This policy of recognition enables access and admission, recognition of learning and the potential of certification. RPL can allow access to a qualification, or it can enable advanced standing or exemption from modules that constitute part of a qualification leading to a registered qualification.

    RPL for Access:
  • Admission is gained via RPL on the basis that a portfolio of evidence is submitted showing prior learning may be a combination of formal, informal, and/or non-formal learning.
  • Evidence of any prior learning is evaluated against the outcomes required for admission to a specific qualification.

    RPL for Credits:
  • The eta RPL & credit accumulation and transfer (CAT) policy guides decisions about access for those who do not meet the formal entry requirements for admission.
  • Credits are awarded for such learning if it meets the requirements of the intended learning qualification.
  • Credit is awarded for the knowledge and skills acquired through experience, rather than for experience alone.

The focus is on what has been learned and not on the status of the institution, organisation, or place where the learning was obtained. Prior learning is made explicit through assessment and/or other methods that engage the intrinsic development of knowledge, skills and competencies acquired. Candidate guidance and support, the preparation of evidence, and the development of an appropriate combination of further teaching and learning, mentoring and assessment approaches are core to RPL practice.
