This qualification also facilitates further studies in business management, wellness management, or executive leadership. Upon completion of the qualification, a qualified learner will be able to: The curriculum will integrate key learner attributes such as critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, self-management, and ethical decision-making. Graduates will acquire skills in accessing, processing, and managing business information, effectively communicating strategies and applying industry-specific technologies. Emphasis will be placed on ethical considerations, including compliance with regulatory standards and financial accountability, alongside incorporating health and safety standards into the curriculum to promote responsible practices in spa and salon management and ensure that graduates adhere to industry best practices in wellness and client care. Rationale: The global wellness industry is expanding at a rate that outpaces overall economic growth. This rapid growth has led to an increased demand for qualified spa and salon managers who possess both business and industry-specific expertise. An analysis of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) confirms that there is no existing Advanced Diploma in Spa and Salon Management, further emphasising the necessity for this qualification. By integrating business management skills with industry-specific knowledge, this qualification helps close a critical skills gap in the wellness sector. This qualification aligns with national skills development priorities outlined in the 2024 List of Occupations in High Demand, highlighting a shortage of management and entrepreneurial skills. The need for skilled business leaders, such as corporate general managers, small business managers, and operations managers, highlights the importance of industry-specific management qualifications. Given that over 90% of South African businesses are classified as Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs), developing entrepreneurial skills is essential for fostering economic growth and ensuring business sustainability (International Council for Small Business, 2024). This qualification is designed to enhance the professional capabilities of individuals in the spa and salon industry, fostering leadership, strategic thinking, and operational management competencies. The qualification is expected to contribute to job creation, business sustainability, and the overall growth of the wellness sector by equipping graduates with essential managerial and entrepreneurial skills. Consultations with industry professionals, spa and wellness business owners, and representatives from the South African Association of Health and Skincare Professionals (SAAHSP) confirmed the demand for a specialised qualification tailored to the industry's evolving needs. Employers require managers who can enhance business operations, drive customer satisfaction, and uphold ethical and professional standards. The qualification will also contribute to South Africa's economic transformation by supporting workforce upskilling and entrepreneurship. Furthermore, offering the qualification through distance learning enables broader access across South Africa and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), addressing the demand for management skills beyond metropolitan areas. This qualification targets individuals with a three-year Diploma or Degree who wish to specialise in spa and salon management. It also appeals to industry professionals seeking career advancement and aspiring entrepreneurs looking to establish their businesses. Graduates of this qualification will be well-equipped for leadership roles within the spa and salon sector and may pursue further studies in business management or wellness leadership. Career pathways include, but are not limited to: In compliance with Section 28 of the NQF Act, this qualification aligns with industry expectations and professional standards. The qualification provides multiple career and learning pathways, allowing graduates to progress within their professions or pursue further academic studies. Typical occupations linked to this qualification include spa management, business consultancy, entrepreneurship, and leadership roles within the wellness sector. Additionally, the qualification supports articulation into higher-level business qualifications, ensuring continued professional and academic growth opportunities. |
