PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The purpose of the Bachelor of Fashion is to equip learners with a comprehensive and integrated understanding of the fashion industry, encompassing design, business, and operational concepts at various levels of complexity. This qualification is designed to meet the national and global demand for fashion professionals who are not only creative and technically skilled but also knowledgeable about sustainable and ethical practices within the industry.

The qualification aims to develop graduates who can contribute meaningfully to the fashion industry by combining a solid foundation in fashion design with a deep understanding of the industry's business and operational aspects. Learners will gain expertise in garment construction, pattern engineering, fabrication, and styling, all within a commercial and sustainable context. They will also develop critical skills in textile development and usage, applying these to the design process while prioritizing sustainability in fabric sourcing and production. At all levels, learners are introduced to leading technology and innovative approaches.

A thorough understanding of fashion history is emphasized, as it enables learners to analyse and critically approach the past, present and future needs of society in relation to fashion. Furthermore, learners will gain an understanding of the social and cultural implications of fashion, and how it relates to culture, class and dress in society. It is important to note that cultural sensitivity is a crucial aspect of fashion design, and the qualification will emphasize the importance of creating designs that are respectful and inclusive of diverse cultures. Especially from within an African context, learners are pointed towards an African design ethic with the underlying academically sound study of culture and dress in society.

Further to the above, learners will gain knowledge of fashion business, production processes, and technical skills associated with operations management, including project and supply chain management. It is important to note that sustainable practices will be emphasized throughout the course, from textile sourcing and production to operations and retail management, ethical considerations and consumer behaviour.

The qualification emphasizes the importance of research and data analysis, by providing learners with knowledge of qualitative research methodologies and quantitative forecasting techniques, and how to apply them within the fashion context. The goal is to enable each learner to achieve their full potential and actively engage in the fashion industry, with a strong focus on sustainable and ethical practices.

Upon completion of the qualification, a qualifying learner will be able to:
  • Critically analyse, develop and communicate design concepts in the area of fashion design by utilising advanced principles, techniques and technologies relating to fashion design and trend forecasting.
  • Apply industry-standard software and tools to develop drawings and patterns to industry standards from first principles to complex solutions in design, patterns and garment technology.
  • Interpret and apply 2- and 3-dimensional drawings and use analytical skills to produce technically engineered apparel and related products within the garment technology and clothing production fields.
  • Critically analyse, evaluate and apply principles of textile technology and the technical properties of various fabrics while considering sustainability principles in fabric sourcing, fashion design and production.

    Rationale:
This qualification is designed to address the evolving demands of the fashion industry, and it was developed in response to the growing need for highly skilled professionals capable of navigating the complexities of both local and international fashion markets. The demand for fashion experts who possess advanced knowledge, research capabilities, and a focus on innovation, sustainability, and individual expression has been consistently voiced by industry stakeholders. Learners with higher qualifications will enter the fashion industry better equipped to conduct research and actively promote innovation, sustainability and the need for individual expression. Rapid changes in technology have necessitated efficient and productive organisations which are economically sound.

After graduation learners will be able to combine theory, practice and business needs with the necessary knowledge, to be able to become effective and efficient participants in the fashion industry. The qualification goes beyond the development of simple production processes and products and aims to empower learners to achieve excellence in all aspects of the fashion industry.

The industry of fashion globally spans numerous economic sectors has a profound impact on today's society and employs millions of people globally. Fashion incorporates the production of fibres, textiles, apparel and home products, sporting products and various others for consumers around the world. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the global impact of the fashion industry is at the core of the Bachelor of Fashion.

In addition to having a thorough focus on a global fashion industry, the local South African fashion industry is also diverse and the positions available to learners within the industry are varied, therefore the qualification provides advanced skills that will lead to the competitiveness of the South African environment, and ultimately contribute to its economic growth.

The R-CTFL (Retail Clothing Textile, Footwear and Leather) Value chain master plan of 2030 focuses on reviving and developing South Africa's clothing and textile industry by addressing key challenges such as declining production, job losses, and erosion of the country's competitive advantage. The Bachelor in Fashion aligns with this master plan by providing learners with the necessary skills for success within the fashion industry, promoting sustainable and responsible practices, fostering innovation, developing a more informed and conscious workforce, and addressing the business and operations management aspects of the fashion industry.

In short, the qualification is aimed at nurturing and producing specialists with a strong grounding in design principles, and organisational, and communication skills. The learners will be taught to master a wide range of technical and physical skills, which they will use to create highly creative and original solutions for complex design problems.
