PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
Purpose:
The purpose of the Higher Certificate in Logistics Management is to equip learners with the knowledge and skills in the field of logistics management. The qualification will enable learners to understand and apply leadership principles, effective communication, and team-building skills in a logistics management context. Furthermore, the qualification seeks to develop learners' ability to discuss logistics management concepts and to formulate strategies for optimising logistics operations and enhancing overall supply chain performance. The qualification aims to provide learners with a foundation in basic economic principles to effectively manage the financial aspects of logistics and supply chain management. It also focuses on fostering an understanding of quality management principles and sustainable practices in logistics operations, enabling learners to analyse and develop strategies for sustainable logistics operations (Mohr, Fourie, Heizer, Render, and Munson, 2020). The qualification will enable learners to evaluate logistics operations concepts and principles and develop strategies for effective inventory management, warehousing, transportation, and distribution. This includes the ability to assess and optimise inventory levels, manage warehouse operations, plan efficient transportation routes, and coordinate distribution activities (Langley, Novack, Gibson, and Coyle, 2020). On completion of the qualification, the qualifying learners will be able to: Rationale: The qualification was developed to address a need for skills development within the supply chain, operations, and logistics management discipline. Logistics within an organisation improves consumer satisfaction and supply chain efficiency. Hence, knowledge acquisition within logistics management is crucial in an organisation's attempt to successfully engage in storing and transporting of commodities to customers. According to Mageto and Luke (2020), supply chains (SCs) expand the complexity and increase the demand for skilled supply chain professionals. Logistics management is a complex area of knowledge, thus seamless operation is necessary to keep up with changing trends. Logistics management plans, executes, and controls many operations within an organisation, and by extension reduces operating costs and improves customer satisfaction. These skills are greatly needed within the workforce; thus, the qualification aligns with knowledge creation and skills development. According to Axestrack (2022), logistics plays an integral role in optimising the supply chain processes and enhancing the customer experience. Businesses understand the importance of logistics management as it is a critical element in determining how the goods are acquired, stored, and transported to the end consumer. The qualification equips qualified learners with a broad range of intellectual abilities and practical capabilities for learning, interpreting, and comprehending the concepts of logistics management. The curriculum is designed to provide learners with the fundamentals of management as well as the abilities and information necessary for operational-level supply chain and logistics professionals. Equipping people with pertinent industry-related skills, such as practical knowledge of the logistics sector, general management principles, logistics management principles, practical decision-making abilities, and situational analysis skills, may assist in meeting industry-specific demands. The qualification will provide an opportunity for learners to continue their studies in their field of interest and to acquire much-needed skills at a tertiary level. The distance mode of provisioning aims to ensure that it promotes wider and more equitable access and reaches larger sections of learners wanting to study towards the qualification. The qualification aims to bridge the skills gap and offer an opportunity for learners to receive the required access to skills development in logistics or supply chain management. The learner's competencies will be assessed in an integrated way utilizing both formative and summative assessment. Assessment centres on: Assessment methods measure the extent to which the learner has achieved competence in the different areas of study delivered through course modules. These assessments are in the form of scenario-based multiple choice, true/false or a combination of which constitutes 40% Summative assessment consists of a project component which contributes 60% of the final assessment weighting to allow learners to synthesise their experiences and knowledge and apply these to practical scenarios. |
INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY |
The institution ensures that all qualifications offered compare well with industry standards and requirements on a national and international level. Internationally, most institutions offer 2-12-month short course certificates in logistics. Three international institutions from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom were compared with the South African qualification.

Purpose: The qualification provides learners with the knowledge and abilities required for success in the global supply chain industry. It focuses on logistics and supply chain management with a significant emphasis on transportation factors. The coursework examines the maritime industry, transportation policy and planning, transportation management and economics, and the function of logistics in optimising supply chain management. Compulsory Modules: Similarities; Differences: Country: United Kingdom Institution: Cambridge Management and Leadership School Qualification Title: Certificate in Logistics and Supply Chain NQF Level: Level 3 Entry Requirements: The Certificate in Logistics and Supply Chain is open to all learners without any entry restrictions. Purpose: The qualification is designed to introduce learners to the complex concepts of logistics, operational management, procurement, and supply chain management. In the modern global marketplace, companies need to be efficient in supplying and delivering the final products. The qualification involves operational management, logistics, procurement, and project management to deliver all products and services that one consumes every day of our life. Without supply chains, companies cannot meet their expected target market and meet their customers' demand. The qualification attracts employers from all over the world where the qualification holder can have careers with them in Logistics, Procurement and Supply Chain business as Inventory Analyst, Procurement Officer, Warehouse Controller/Manager, Transport, Logistics and Supply Chain Officer or Manager. Similarities: Differences: Country: Canada Institution: McGill School of Continuing Studies Qualification Title: Certificate Supply Chain Management and Logistics Credits: 30 Admission Requirements Or Purpose: Today's highly competitive global marketplace makes it imperative that goods between supplier and consumer move in the most effective and efficient manner. Logistics and supply chain management are key elements in the ability of countries and companies to compete successfully in world markets. Logistics covers the planning, operation and control of all activities concerned with the flow of raw materials, in-process inventory, and finished goods across the supply chain. The demand for highly trained personnel in the supply chain management and logistics fields has never been greater. Exciting career opportunities exist within the supply chain management industry and the broader logistics field for new entrants and for managers and professionals who wish to advance into higher management-level positions. The McGill School of Continuing Studies (MSCS) qualification will provide learners with a strong background in manufacturing supply chain environments and will lead them towards a Certified Production Inventory Management (CPIM) or Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) designation offered by the Association for Operations Management (APICS), provided that the learners pass the APICS examination requirements for the corresponding designation; or the Supply Chain Management Professional (SCMP) designation from Supply Chain Canada. The qualification will also provide learners with a strong background in companies' supply chain, distribution and logistics functions and will lead them towards a Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation (CITT) designation provided that CITT's other requirements are satisfied. Similarities: Differences: Conclusion: The SA qualification compares favourably to international qualifications in logistics management/logistics and supply chain. This provides a broad geographic distribution and enables comparisons to be made that are more context-inclusive. The purpose, learning outcomes, and content, of the SA qualification have been favourably compared to similar qualifications from these institutions. The SA qualification is appropriate for the specific requirements of other countries in terms of holistic and comprehensive logistics management within the supply chain discipline. The SA qualification can be adapted to individual sub-Saharan countries and more especially, as well as all other countries with similar logistics and supply chain operations. |
