PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to function as a Motion Graphics Designer.

A qualified learner will be able to:
  • Determine target market motion graphics content and audience preferences.
  • Prepare for production of motion graphics.
  • Create and produce motion graphics for specific purposes, clients, or audiences.
  • Conduct business processes related motion graphics creation.

    Rationale:
    Motion Graphics Designers make to the graphic and animation sectors' product offering more visually appealing and engaging. Motion graphics designers create memorable brand animations and intros, helping companies establish a strong and recognisable brand identity in the competitive market. The Higher Occupational Qualification: Motion Graphics Designer qualification enables the production of motion graphics contributing to the effectivity of digital marketing campaigns, and boosting click-through rates and user engagement, which is vital for the success of online advertising efforts.

    RPL for Access to Training:
    Learners may use the RPL process to gain access to training opportunities for a programme of learning, qualification, part-qualification, or skills programme if they do not meet the formal, minimum entry requirements for admission. RPL assessment provides an alternative access route into a programme of learning, qualification, part-qualification, or skills programme.

    Such an RPL assessment may be developed, moderated, and conducted by the accredited Skills Development Provider which offers that specific qualification/part qualification/skills programme. Such an assessment must ensure that the learner is able to display the equivalent level of competencies required for access, based on the NQF level descriptors.

    RPL for Exemption
    For exemption from modules through RPL, learners who have gained the stipulated competencies of the modules of a programme of learning, qualification, part-qualification, or skills programme through any means of formal, informal, or non-formal learning and/or work experience, may be awarded credits towards relevant modules, and gaps identified for training, which is then concluded.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Integrated Formative Assessment
    The Skills Development Providers will use the curriculum to guide them on the stipulated internal assessment criteria and weighting. They will also apply the scope of practical skills and applied knowledge as stipulated by the internal assessment criteria. This formative assessment leads to entrance into the integrated External Summative Assessment.

    Integrated Summative Assessment
    An External Integrated Summative Assessment, conducted through the relevant QCTO Assessment Quality Partner is required to issue this qualification. The External Integrated Summative Assessment will focus on the Exit Level Outcomes and Associated Assessment Criteria. Additional to the written assessment the learner must also submit a portfolio of evidence compiled of outcomes achieved in the workplace.

    This qualification was compared with qualifications related to Motion Graphics Designers in Singapore and United States of America (USA).

    United States of America (USA)
    The Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles offers an 18-month Certificate in Motion Graphics which focuses on industry-standard tools and workflows used to produce motion design across film, television, social media, advertising, and video games.

    The following learning outcomes are covered by the qualification:
  • Art and design fundamentals, including graphic design, typography, and digital storytelling.
  • Post-production techniques using editing, music, and sound.
  • How to develop all aspects of a concept, including characters, backgrounds, storytelling, and a final storyboard.
  • Industry-standard motion graphic design tools.
  • Professional practices relevant to a motion graphics career and portfolio development.

    The qualification has no specific entry requirements.

    Similarities
    The learning outcomes focus on design and production fundamentals and application in a wide range of contexts resonates well with Higher Occupational Certificate: Motion Graphics Designer's practical and workplace modules.

    Differences
    The Higher Occupational Certificate: Motion Graphics Designer has a specific focus on business acumen, which is not covered in the Certificate in Motion Graphics offered by the Otis College of Art and Design.     3Dsense Media School (rated the Top Motion Graphics School in the World) in Singapore offers an entry Diploma in Motion Design focussing on mastering various skillsets. Topics covered are:

    The qualification is offered over one-year. Learners require a General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level with English, submit a portfolio, and pass an interview.

    The qualification's focus on graphic design, animation, concept design, storyboarding, typography, composition, video production, art direction and cinematography is similar to the Higher Occupational Certificate: Motion Graphics Designer curriculum.

    Differences
    The Higher Occupational Certificate: Motion Graphics Designer has a specific focus on business acumen, which is not covered in the 3Dsense Media School's Diploma in Motion Design.
