PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:

The qualification will enable the learner to learn and be aware of the need for independence, self-discipline, time-management and abstract thinking in the field of Information Technology and related disciplines. They will also be aware of the social responsibility in dealing with computers and computerised information through, for example, discussions of and examples related to the confidentiality and security of personal or company data, the effects of electronic vandalism and electronic fraud.

The qualification also deals with ethical and cultural issues in the relationship between cultures and the use of Information Technology; the need to act professionally, ethically and with personal integrity; and to take responsibility for the application of the knowledge and skills acquired.

Successful learners will be prepared for and become aware of the many career opportunities available in the various fields which make up the discipline of Information Technology. They will also develop entrepreneurial skills through the use of principles and concepts of Information Technology, integrated with knowledge from other related disciplines.

The purpose of the qualification is to:
  • Provide learners with graduate level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in IT that are required to provide opportunities for personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and for making rewarding contributions to society.
  • Significantly increase the number of graduates in IT to ensure that a greater number of South Africans are capable of participating responsibly in the information age currently upon us.

    Rationale:

    South African legislative and policy requirements and expectation are that the higher education sector be actively engaged and involved in bridging the skills gap inherent throughout our country. This qualification is geared towards closing the skills gap in the Information Technology sector, specifically in regard to graduates who are able to apply computer theory in the business environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner entering this qualification is competent in the language of teaching and learning of the institution offering the qualification at NQF Level 4 and in Computer Studies at NQF Level 4.

    Recognition of Prior Learning:

    Learners` prior learning is recognized through a formal process of submission of portfolio of evidence and evaluation by our staff to recognize any formal or informal learning that the learner might have achieved previously that can be used towards obtaining the qualification in part.

    Access to the Qualification:

    Access is open to learners in possession of a National Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 4 granting access to bachelor degree study.

    2. Use the fundamentals of computing, problem-solving strategies and tools, design methodologies and logical reasoning to accurately design, implement and test solutions to problems.

    3. Research topics related to Information Technology, using a research method appropriate to the topic and organise this information in a presentation or a technical report.

    4. Collaborate in a team to achieve a common goal, which would range from the discussion of a particular topic, to the joint success of a substantial project.

    5. Use reading, writing and oral skills to gain and express knowledge.
  • Range: Literature review of a topic current in IT (reading, academic report writing and presentation); development of an IT industry related project proposal (reading, technical report writing and presentation); development of a web-based, multimedia system (interviewing, technical report writing, systems development and presentation).

    6. Use technology responsibly through regulated practice in laboratories.

    7. Demonstrate the use of Information Technology principles and concepts, and the integration of knowledge from other disciplines, through the development of IT reports and systems related to real-world contexts.

    Critical Cross-Field Outcomes:

    All the Critical Cross-Field Outcomes are addressed in the qualification on an on-going basis. 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The following Assessment Criteria are applied in an integrated way to determine competence in the Exit Level Outcomes:

    1. Social responsibility in dealing with computers and computerised information related to the confidentiality and security of personal or company data is demonstrated.
    2. The effects of electronic vandalism and electronic fraud are understood.
    3. The ethical and cultural issues in the relationship between cultures and the use of Information Technology is understood and related to the need to act professionally, ethically and with personal integrity.
    4. Responsibility is taken for the application of IT knowledge and skills acquired in a business environment.
    5. The many career opportunities available in the various fields which make up the discipline of Information Technology are identified.
    6. Entrepreneurial opportunities and skills developed through the use of principles and concepts of Information Technology are integrated with knowledge from other related disciplines.
    7. The underlying technology, and the theory of systems development and management of IT projects are applied in a practical manner to solve business related problems.
    8. Knowledge on information systems is systematized, integrated and consolidated to supply information storage and retrieval solutions.
    9. A real-world document information system is developed and implemented through problem analysis, system design, programming and management skills application.
    10. Communication and group/team work skills are used to produce computer IT solutions.
    11. The complexities of running a real-world system development project are appreciated.

    Integrated Assessment:

    Continuous assessment is provided through whole range of formative and summative assessment methods that include:
  • Portfolios.
  • Simulations.
  • Workplace assessments and practical workbooks.
  • Written assignments.
  • Written tests.
  • Case studies and case presentations.
  • Peer group evaluation.
  • Competency evaluations of clinical skills.
  • Face to face contact with learners.
  • Final examination.

    Evidence of outcomes is obtained through assignments and projects undertaken individually or as part of a group, as well as short class tests conducted every fortnight. Practical projects throughout the year will assess the learner's progress in her/his ability to develop comprehensive computer-based information systems, and manage the development process.

    Integrated summative assessment is done through a final group project. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    This qualification is on offer in many countries and the content reflects best practice in the field. The qualification is validated through the University of Cambridge International Examination. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification has both vertical and horizontal articulation with related qualification on offer at CTI and our international partners:
  • Vertically, learners will be able to articulate with the Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) on offer at other comparable higher education institutions.
  • Horizontally, the qualification articulates with other Information Technology and Information Systems courses on offer at CTI Education and Midrand Graduate Institute and other comparable higher education institutions. These include the NQF Level 5 and 6 IT Engineering, Comprehensive Programming, Software Development and Internet Development programmes. 

  • MODERATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification is subject to both internal and external moderation, especially at exit points. Assessors would be required to have a Masters Degree and relevant teaching experience in the module/s under evaluation or moderation.
