PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
Purpose:
The purpose of this part-qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Stone Engraver. A qualified learner will be able to engrave and polish the stone to complete the stone product.

Rationale:
Currently, there is no existing qualification for a Stone Engraver hence the part-qualification will enable the current and future practitioners acquire specialised skills from focused and structured training. This part-qualification is important to address the skills of the current and future employees serving within sectors employing Engravers. The industry will draw the learners from the cohort of current employees who performed the function without recognised qualification.

The country has a serious problem of high unemployment impacting negatively on the youth in particular. This part-qualification meets the skills requirements of many members of Funerals Directors Association, National Association of SA Undertakers, South African Funeral Practitioner Association, National Undertakers Association of South Africa and Funeral Industry Practitioners of South Africa. All these associations participated directly or through submission of inputs where necessary.

  • Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction.
  • Principles of Organising, Planning and Pricing Construction Work.
  • Setting Out and Templet Making for Complex Stonemasonry Components.
  • Working Complex Stonemasonry Components.
  • Fixing Complex Stonemasonry Components.
  • Principles of Architectural Heritage
  • Conservation and Restoration.

The qualification covers a vast area compared to the South African part-qualification that only focuses on engraving. Similarities are limited to principles of working with stonemasonry components and setting out and templet making for stonemasonry components.

    Australia
