PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of this part-qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Stone Erector.

A qualified learner will be able to mix different types of bonding material to affix and erect stone products to specifications.

Rationale:
Currently, there is no existing qualification for a Stone Erector. This part-qualification is important to address the skills of the current and future employees serving within sectors employing Stone Erector. The industry will draw the learners from the cohort of current employees who performed the function without recognised qualification. The part-qualification will enable the current and future practitioners acquire specialised skills from focused and structured training.

The country has a serious problem of high unemployment impacting negatively on the youth in particular. Acquisition of this part-qualification will enhance personal esteem for current practitioner and restore the dignity of those who practised without qualification. Qualifying learners have many opportunities to perfect their trade within such field as construction, art and manufacturing. The qualifying learners will be able to practice as supporting practitioners within construction and craft businesses. Learners can progress horizontally to Stone Engraving and Stone Polishing as well as vertically as Stonemasons or Tilers.

This part-qualification meets the skills requirements of many members of Funerals Directors Association, National Association of South African Undertakers, South African Funeral Practitioner Association, National Undertakers Association of South African and Funeral Industry Practitioners of Southern Africa. All these associations participated directly or through submission of inputs where necessary.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
RPL for access to the External Integrated Summative Assessment:
Accredited providers and approved workplaces must apply the internal assessment criteria specified in the related curriculum document to establish and confirm prior learning. Accredited providers and workplaces must confirm prior learning by issuing a statement of result or certifying a work experience record.

RPL for access to the Qualification:
Accredited providers and approved workplaces may recognise prior learning against the relevant access requirements.

Entry Requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this part-qualification is:
  • NQF Level 2 qualification with Mathematics and Science.

    This part-qualification consists of the following compulsory Knowledge, Practical Skill and Work Experience Modules:

    Knowledge Modules:

  • 641301-000-00-00-KM03, Interpret and Draw Engineering Drawings, Level 3, 15 Credits.
  • 641301-000-00-00-KM06, Stonemason Consumables and Materials, Level 4, 25 Credits.

    Total number of credits for Knowledge Modules: 55.

    Practical Skill Modules:
  • 641301-000-00-00-PM08, Erection and Installation of Stone Products, Level 3, 20 Credits.

    Total number of credits for Practical Skill Modules: 20.

    Work Experience Modules:
  • 641301-000-00-00-WM06, Erection and Stone Installation Processes, Level 3, 25 Credits.

    Total number of credits for Work Experience Modules: 25. 

  • EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    1. Prepare the stone for installation to prescribed specifications.
    2. Erect and install the stone to complete the design specifications. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:
  • Explain the installation specifications in terms of the drawing and material requirements.
  • Describe tools identified and selected for installation and explain and demonstrate their respective use.
  • Identify and use measurement tools to measure the area for installation.
  • Select and mix various bonding material to application specifications.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:
  • Apply the spread of the bonding material at the marked and measured areas.
  • Ensure that tools and equipment used to move stones helps to protect the stone and provide protection of employees.
  • Install stone to correct measurements to comply with the drawing specifications.
  • Ensure that drilled holes used to anchor the stone has correct diameters for the steel used for stone erection.

    INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT
    Integrated Formative Assessment
    The Skills Development Provider will use the curriculum to guide them on the stipulated internal assessment criteria and weighting. They will also apply the scope of practical skills and applied knowledge as stipulated by the internal assessment criteria. This formative assessment leads to entrance into the integrated External Summative Assessment.

    Integrated Summative Assessment
    An External Integrated Summative Assessment conducted through the relevant QCTO Assessment Quality Partner is required for the issuing of this qualification. The External Integrated Summative Assessment will focus on the Exit Level Outcomes and Associated Assessment Criteria. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    A comparable study was done with the following countries.

    United Kingdom
    City & Guilds provides a level 2 Diploma in Stonemasonry. The qualification offers the following units standards:
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction.
  • Principles of building construction, information and communication.
  • Setting out and templet making for stonemasonry components.
  • Working stonemasonry components.
  • Fixing stonemasonry components.
  • Principles of architectural heritage, conservation and restoration.

    The qualification covers a vast area compared to the South African part-qualification that only focuses on engraving. Similarities are limited to principles of working with stonemasonry components and setting out and templet making for stonemasonry components

    Australia
    Victorian Skills gateways offers Certificate 111 in Stonemasonry (monumental/ Installation). The qualification requires entry level apprenticeship training and Mathematics as entry requirements. The qualification offers variety of modules and few that are comparable to the Occupational Certificate: Stone Erector, which are:
  • Studying plans and specifications to determine materials required.
  • Dimensions and installation procedures.
  • Seals foundations with damp-resistant materials and spreads layers of mortar to serve as a base and binder for blocks using trowels.
  • Laying bricks in rows, spreads mortar between joints, embedding blocks in mortar and remove excess mortar and lastly checking vertical and horizontal alignment.

    Conclusion
    The qualifications analysed from these two countries are comparable, however the duration of the actual qualification and the many areas covered, exceed the scope of the Occupational Certificate: Stone Erector.

    Qualifying for External Assessment:
    To qualify for an external assessment, learners must provide proof of completion of all required modules by means of statements of results and work experience records.
