PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of the Master of Consumer Sciences is to ensure that learners are provided with in-depth advanced knowledge in the fields of culinary studies, agro-processing, consumer behaviour, food science, food security, resource management, indigenous foods/knowledge systems and nutritional principles used in the development and production of food products with the emphasis on nutritious convenient foods. Learners will have to master their discipline to manage very complex issues and come up with workable solutions to solve problems and challenges in the field after defending their opinions. Learners will also acquire training in research methods and techniques at advanced levels to communicate their research scientifically. Learners who will qualify for this qualification will be able to maintain high standards of academic work and promote academic integrity and professional ethics. Candidates who successfully complete this qualification will contribute to the social and economic development and transformation of the community and industry. Qualifying learners will meet specific competency outcomes in providing theoretical, entrepreneurial, innovative, and practical education.

Upon completion of the qualification, qualifying learners will be able to:

    Rationale:
    The qualification is career-focused and will promote the development of scientists who will have the technical competence to address food /nutrition insecurity, be specialists in indigenous knowledge systems and develop the critical intellectual ability to ensure the future of economic activity based on scientific endeavours. Hence, this qualification will contribute to the National Development Plan 2030 requirements.

    The qualification was developed in extensive consultation with all stakeholders such as the South African Association of Family Ecology and Consumer Science (SAAFECS), former learner workforce, the food industry, and academics. Feedback from these consultations indicated the need for the qualification to enable a learner who is interested in research in furthering their academic advancement in the Consumer Sciences field of specialisation. Learners will be required to conduct a research project through independent research culminating in the production and successful completion of a dissertation, which implies that learners must have a high level of personal autonomy and accountability in planning, managing, and executing a substantial research project while demonstrating the ability to apply, integrate and contextualise advanced knowledge and skills in this field of study. In completing the research project and dissertation, learners must demonstrate the ability to address complex and challenging problems and show an understanding of the ethical issues and consequences of any solutions or insights generated within a specific context.

    The qualification will maintain an appropriate balance of theoretical and practical knowledge and equip learners with the skills to find employment in the broad field of Consumer Sciences such as the food services industry and hospitality. Qualifying learners may be absorbed by the local economy, and this will help to alleviate the skills shortage and equip the industry to deliver a better service to their respective stakeholders. The curriculum is suited to its purpose, internally coherent and mindful of the needs of the learners and relevant stakeholders. Entrepreneurship skills will assist learners to create job opportunities in the value-adding and food processing sector.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    The institution has an approved Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy which is applicable with regard to equivalent qualifications for admission into the qualification. RPL will be applied to accommodate applicants who qualify. RPL thus provides alternative access and admission to qualifications, as well as advancement within qualifications. RPL may be applied for access, credits from modules and credits for or towards the qualification.

    RPL for access:
  • Learners who do not meet the minimum entrance requirements or the required qualification that is at the same NQF level as the qualification required for admission may be considered for admission through RPL.
  • To be considered for admission in the qualification based on RPL, applicants should provide evidence in the form of a portfolio that demonstrates that they have acquired the relevant knowledge, skills, and competencies through formal, non-formal and/or informal learning to cope with the qualification expectations should they be allowed entrance into the qualification.

    RPL for exemption of modules:
  • Learners may apply for RPL to be exempted from modules that form part of the qualification. For a learner to be exempted from a module, the learner needs to provide sufficient evidence in the form of a portfolio that demonstrates that competency was achieved for the learning outcomes that are equivalent to the learning outcomes of the module.

    RPL for credit:
  • Learners may also apply for RPL for credit for or towards the qualification, in which they must provide evidence in the form of a portfolio that demonstrates prior learning through formal, non-formal and/or informal learning to obtain credits towards the qualification.

  • Prepare a report for publication in a nationally accredited journal or peer-reviewed conference paper in consultation with the supervisor(s) based on relevant criteria.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Integrated Assessment at the level of the qualification provides an opportunity for learners to show that they know how to integrate concepts, ideas, and actions across this qualification to achieve competence that is grounded and coherent with the purpose of this qualification. Integrated assessment will show how already demonstrated competence in individual areas can be linked and applied for the achievement of a holistic outcome as described in the Exit Level Outcomes.

    Integrated Assessment will judge the quality of the observable performance, and the quality of the reasoning that lies behind it. Assessments tools will encourage learners to give an account of the thinking and decision-making that underpin their demonstrated performance. Quality assessment is central to credible certification and recognition of learner achievement. The institution will ensure credibility in assessment through the application of clear and rigorous procedures and practices, in keeping with the principles of fairness, validity, reliability and practicability. Learners will be expected to do progress monthly reports and quarterly presentations will be conducted so that learners can present their progress. Integrated assessment in this qualification allows the learners to demonstrate applied competence and uses a range of formative and summative assessment methods.

    Formative Assessment:
    Formative assessment means a range of formal, non-formal, and informal ongoing assessment procedures used to focus teaching and learning activities to improve learner attainment. Formative assessments will include inter alia the following:
  • Reports.
  • Proposal Presentations.
  • Departmental seminars for the literature, methodology and preliminary findings.
  • Presentations via external seminars.
  • Feedback from the supervisors and co-supervisor.

    Summative Assessment:
    Summative assessment refers to an assessment which will take place at the end of a learning experience. Results are expressed in marks in terms of the level of competence achieved, regarding level descriptors, and associated assessment criteria. This assessment is also used for promotional purposes. Summative assessment includes:

    Purpose:
    Both the USU and SA qualifications are intended to expand academic preparation in the areas of family studies, housing, textiles and clothing, nutrition and food sciences, and management of personal resources. The USU and SA qualifications prepare learners who would like to earn a future Doctoral Degree.

    Differences:
    The Utah State University (USU) qualification differs from the South African qualification in the following aspects.

    Duration:
    Learners who follow the USU qualification will be able to complete it in two years (5 semesters) whereas the SA qualification takes one year of full-time study to complete.

    Entry Requirements:
    The USU qualification accepts learners from any undergraduate background to apply whereas the SA qualification requires learners who have completed the Honours Degree in the appropriate field of study.

    Purpose/Rationale:
    The USU qualification is recommended for those who will be working in an area of education requiring research in addition to teaching or those seeking a Doctoral Degree. It places emphasis on teaching and curriculum development and/or Extension. While this qualification does not result in a teaching license for public schools, learners will develop skills in the areas of instruction, curriculum planning, evaluation and research related to research methodology and statistical applications.

    Learners completing the USU qualification are prepared for working in formal post-secondary and non-formal education (outreach and extension) settings.

    Qualification structure:
    The Utah State University (USU) qualification covers family studies, nutrition and food sciences, housing, textiles/ clothing, and extension and management of personal resources. Emphasis on teaching and curriculum development, housing, textiles/ clothing, and extension. A thesis is required. Most of the coursework (30 credits) is available online whereas the SA qualification's mode of delivery is contact only and consists of a Dissertation and no coursework. Most learners in the qualification take two classes (6 credits) per semester. Learners who follow this will be able to complete the USU qualification in two years (5 semesters).

    The Wageningen University and Research (WUR) qualification is comparable to the South African (SA) qualification in the following criteria.

    Entry Requirements:
    To access both the WUR and SA qualification, candidates must have completed a Bachelor of Science Honours in Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Communication Science, Marketing, Consumer Behaviour, Product Design, Agricultural Sciences or Food Sciences and Consumer Science to be eligible for this qualification.

    Purpose:
    Consumer Studies offer a unique approach to studying consumers in an ever-changing society. Both qualifications provide learners with the knowledge and skills to analyse consumers. Learners will understand how consumers take rational and emotional decisions, in the short and the long run. As a graduate of Consumer Studies learners can find employment in businesses, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or governmental advisory roles or research and education.

    On completion of the WUR and SA qualifications, learners will be able to:
  • Analyse the behaviour of consumers to improve quality of life which is central to the qualification.
  • Combine insights from psychology, economics, design, and sociology, in an interdisciplinary perspective.
  • Examine consumers in contexts relevant to the life sciences domain, integrating insights from a range of natural sciences such as food technology.
  • Apply a consumer-centred view in business, governmental and NGOs, and research.

    The diverse field of consumer studies is looking for academically trained consumer scientists who can work with people from different departments and backgrounds. Both qualifications will train learners to become multi-specialist who is able to connect with the different parties in the field. Qualifying learners can work as consumer experts in marketing or communication departments of commercial businesses, at market research companies, in NGOs or a government department or as a researcher or teacher at a university.

    Differences:
    The WUR differs from the SA qualification in the following aspects.

    Duration:
    The WUR qualification is offered over two years of full-time study whereas the SA qualification takes one year to complete.

    Qualification structure:
    The WUR is a two-year qualification, including a hands-on consultancy course, an internship, and a Major thesis whereas the SA qualification is a pure dissertation and has no course work.

    The WUR qualification consists of specific modules 30 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). A typical master's degree would have between 90 and 120 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits where 1 ECTS credit is equal to 2 Credits in the United Kingdom system, with a minimum of 60 credits at the second cycle level. The South African National credit rating system rates 10 notational study hours as equivalent to one credit.

    The space for electives can be used for deepening or broadening knowledge on the field of interest of each individual learner.

    Year Two:
    Thesis, 36 ECTS.
    The thesis (individual research) consists of 24 weeks of research and reporting (36 credits). The research is conducted under the supervision of a staff member of one of the chair groups related to this master's programme.

    Internship, 24 ECTS.
    The internship consists of 24 credits of project work in an institution outside of Wageningen University. The internship may either be undertaken in the Netherlands or abroad. The purpose of the internship is to provide learners with a unique learning opportunity to apply acquired knowledge and skills in a professional setting. The experience gained from the internship also serves to help learners focus on their area of interest, as well as build confidence and maturity in their field.

    Both the CSU and SA qualifications will increase a learner's ability to use subject matter, research, and communication skills for employment in professional positions in business, education, non-profit organizations, or government. Graduates are prepared to continue their studies in doctoral programs.

    Differences:
    The CSU qualification differs from the SA qualification in the following aspects.

    Purpose:
    The CSU qualification is designed for professionals seeking advanced study in apparel and related topics or family and consumer sciences education. The qualification is intended to serve two general groups, including bachelor-degreed apparel industry professionals who seek to augment their educational background regarding consumers of apparel and related products, as well as middle- and high-school educators in family and consumer sciences who wish to maintain their educator licensure while advancing professionally.

    Qualification structure:
    The CSU qualification consists of coursework and mini-thesis whereas the SA qualification consists of a pure Dissertation and no coursework. This CSU qualification requires a minimum of 30 semester hours.

    The CSU qualification covers Consumer Affairs and Family Studies and puts more emphasis on Apparel Design and Merchandising whereas the South African qualification covers culinary studies for food service management, agro-processing, consumer behaviour, food security, community nutrition, resource management, indigenous foods/knowledge systems and food innovation and product development.     Specialization in Apparel Studies
    This specialization, oriented toward the human sciences, is designed to enhance learners' abilities in applying subject matter, critical thinking, and oral and written communication skills in the professional apparel industry.     The TUM School of Management qualification carries 120 credits whereas the SA qualification carries 180 credits.

    Entry Requirements:
    The TUM) School of Management qualification require:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Management, Economics, or other Social Sciences (e.g., Sociology, Psychology, Communication Sciences or equivalent) with a minimum of 15 ECTS in empirical research methods, statistics, quantitative methods, or mathematics while SA qualification requires learners who have completed an Honour's Degree in Consumer Science or equivalent qualification.

    Duration:
    The TUM School of Management qualification is offered over four semesters which translates into two years whereas the SA qualification takes one year of full-time study.

    Qualification structure:
    The TUM School of Management qualification includes a mandatory Project Studies module that provides learners with hands-on experience in a practical, interdisciplinary environment. All students spend at least a short period abroad as part of their degree to give learners an intercultural sensitivity that will greatly benefit them as managers. The SA qualification does not include the Project Studies module but consists of the Dissertation and no coursework.
