PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to qualify as an Automotive Clutch and Brake Repairer.

An Automotive Clutch and Brake Repairer removes and installs brakes and clutch components.

Rationale:
This qualification is designed for learners who remove and install brakes and clutch on vehicle within the automotive industry.

The qualification is aimed at both new entrant as well as learners who have been working within the Automotive industry. The qualification will also provide learners with a foundation to pursue other part qualifications, these being, Automotive Drive Train Repairer and Automotive Suspension Repairer.

Upon completion this qualification, learners can advance their careers by taking higher level responsibilities within their respective organisation. Learners who successfully complete this part qualification can participate effectively in the Automotive industry, whether in small, medium, or large enterprises. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
  • Learners will gain access to the qualification through RPL for Access as provided for in the QCTO RPL Policy. RPL for access is conducted by accredited education institution, skills development provider or workplace accredited to offer that specific qualification/part qualification.
  • Learners who have acquired competencies of the modules of a qualification or part qualification will be credited for modules through RPL.

    1. Perform preventative and scheduled maintenance on petrol and diesel road vehicles.
    2. Remove and install brakes and clutch components.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:
  • Discuss the general principles and critical issues relating to performing scheduled maintenance on light motor vehicles according to accepted industry standards.
  • Perform the service according to the manufacturer's schedule, specifications, and timeframes.
  • Source and correctly interpret technical information.
  • Compile the maintenance report on the condition of all the required components and systems, including defective components according to industry requirements.
  • Remove, replace, and test components as per the service schedule.
  • Plan the work is systematically and prepare the work area according to task requirements.
  • Perform all activities with confidence.
  • Perform workmanship according to industry standards.
  • Perform all activities according to safety and environmental requirements.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:
  • Discuss general principles and critical issues relating to the removal and installation of brakes and clutch components on vehicles according to accepted industry standards.
  • Secure and correctly interpret technical information.
  • Compile maintenance report on the condition of all the required components and systems, including defective components according to industry requirements.
  • Remove, replace, and test components as per manufacturer's specifications
  • Plan the works is systematically and prepare the work area according to task requirements.
  • Perform all activities with confidence.
  • Ensure that workmanship meets industry standards.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Integrated Formative Assessment
    The skills development provider will use the curriculum to guide them on the stipulated internal assessment criteria and weighting. They will also apply the scope of practical skills and applied knowledge as stipulated by the internal assessment criteria. This formative assessment together with work experience leads to entrance in the integrated external summative assessment.

    Integrated Summative Assessment
    An external integrated summative assessment, conducted through the relevant QCTO Assessment Quality Partner is required for the issuing of this qualification. The external integrated summative assessment will focus on the exit level outcomes and associated assessment criteria.

    The assessment will be conducted through written assessment and the evaluation of practical tasks at decentralised approved assessment sites by a panel of assessors evaluated by assessor(s) registered with the AQP within a period of 1 day.

    Comparisons were made to similar automotive motor mechanic qualifications in Australia, and New Zealand.

    Australia
    Australia has Certificate III Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology that is offered by TAFE NSW. The course covers the following: TAFE NSW's state-of-the-art facilities will give you the practical skills you need to be in demand in this fast-growing industry.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical or electronic systems
  • Test and repair of light vehicle mechanical systems, brakes, transmissions, and cooling systems
  • Technical issues with customers in a language that they will understand, and essential Work Health and Safety practices in the workplace.

    New Zealand
    New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering Level 3, which is offered by Manukau Institute of Technology. The course covers the following areas:
  • Automotive workshop safety.
  • Workshop engineering tools and equipment.
  • Engines and cooling systems.
  • Automotive engine tuning and fuel system.
  • Automotive transmission and driveline system.
  • Automotive electrical technology.
  • Automotive electronic and HVAC systems.
