| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| Purpose:
The purpose of the Higher Certificate in Business Management is to equip learners with the knowledge, skills and attitude needed to competently manage an organisation as well as to conduct various business management functions in the workplace to meet the increasing demand for managers in South Africa. The qualification has a real-world and industry focus and provides a basis for entry into the labour market, professional training, and a gateway to further Higher Education pursuits. The pedagogic design of the qualification ensures that the purpose is met and reflects the intentional development of a curriculum that provides core competencies aligned to its intended purpose. Qualifying learners will have fulfilled the following Exit Level Outcomes: Rationale: The National List of Occupations in High Demand (2018) reflects a need for managers with six out of the top ten list being managerial needs across different economic sectors. The need for corporate managers holds 10th place on the list, reflecting a great need for individuals in the profession. In addition to this, the World Economic Forum rates the business field as one of the most likely to create global employment. This qualification is therefore a response to this need in the workplace for more competent managers in the country and globally. This qualification is a response to the current demand for broadening access to learners into new and relevant degree offerings that address the national need for employable and well-trained managers within the business industry. Given that South Africa embraces diversity and organisations are transforming, the importance of the role of the business manager is to ensure that both people and the organisation function effectively. The workplace is diverse and ever-changing, management will need to adapt and be flexible to changes internally and externally. These changes include, but are not limited to the economic landscape as well as the political, financial and social landscapes which all affect the business environment. The institution has been attentive to this challenge and innovative in designing this qualification to be one that truly speaks to what is needed in South Africa. From a stakeholder perspective, the rationale behind this qualification is to: Qualifying learners will have acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to be able to contribute meaningfully to organisations as competent managers. They will be well equipped to take up roles in organisations to meet the demand for more managers and they will do so professionally and competently. The foundation for understanding the various facets of business lies in having knowledge of business management. It is therefore important for an individual to have a well-rounded general view of all business functions to be able to make effective decisions that will benefit the organisation. It is anticipated that the qualification will draw a range of learners from those who have just completed high school to those who are already in the workplace and require a qualification or further training. The qualification prepares learners to enter into the workplace and function in roles in general management, business consulting as well as possibly becoming business owners themselves. Qualifying learners will be well equipped to take up roles in organisations to meet the demand for more managers and they will do so professionally and competently. Country: United Kingdom Institution: Bellerbys College The Bellerbys College is a specialist international college that offers university preparation courses. The college spans across two campuses, in both Brighton and London, and its learner body consists of learners from more than sixty countries. The college offers a range of courses for international learners and the qualifications are supported by activities, trips, talks and challenges which emphasises learning beyond the classroom and into the wider world. The Bellerbys undergraduate year one in Business and Management is equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree and combines business modules with Academic English Skills. Learners are prepared for the second year of a business-related degree at UK Institutions. Similar to the new qualification, Bellerby College's qualification provides a foundation in business and management and equips learners with a generalist overview of the business and management fields as well as specialist subject knowledge. As with the new qualification, The Bellerby College's qualification prepares learners for further Higher Education studies. The Bellerby College's qualification has core module similarities, the new qualification has an additional 4 modules which have been included to provide a social context for South Africa as well as providing an organisational perspective of business management. These modules are: In Addition, the inclusion of digital literacies in the new qualification is to prepare learners to embrace technology use in business management. The Bellerby's College qualification also emphasises the financial side of business management through its inclusion of accounting as a module. The new qualification emphasises individual, group and organisational levels influences on the business environment and is people-centric. Country: United States of America Institution: University of Maryland Global Campus Qualification Title: Management Foundations Certificate The online undergraduate certificate in management foundation help learners to gain expertise through a flexible course of study that focuses on decision making, problem-solving and leadership. Learners focus on management principles and organisational dynamics for today's global, multicultural and multinational organisations. Learners benefit from a full spectrum of related business courses covering statistics, business writing, marketing, finance and organisational behaviour. Similar to the new qualification, the Management Foundations Undergraduate Certificate focuses on management principles and organisational dynamics to prepare individuals to work in global, multicultural and multinational organisations. As with the new qualification, this qualification focuses on self-reflection and mindfulness of individual and cultural differences in a business environment. Both qualifications cater for the needs of learners from different working contexts and realities and offer the opportunity for further study. Country: United Kingdom Institution: The Open University Qualification Title: Certificate of Higher Education in Business Management This Certificate of Higher Education has one stage comprising 120 credits. Learners start with an introductory business and management module and continue with a broad study of business management, economics, innovation and enterprise, leadership practice and marketing. Similar to the new qualification, this is an introductory qualification to the essentials of business and management. Learners in this qualification gain broad knowledge in the study of business and then choose a specialist route (Economics, Innovation and Enterprise, Leadership Practice and Marketing). As with the new qualification, the learners that complete the qualification are equipped to follow career paths in business management. While there are similarities in the core businesses management, there may be contextual differences in the content allowing for learners to be provided with context-relevant knowledge. |
