| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| Purpose:
The purpose of the Bachelor of Theology is suitable to produce learners who wish to pursue the ordained ministry of the Church of Southern Africa. The qualification aims to: Although primarily designed to meet the requirements of the Church, the qualification is broad and inclusive enough to satisfy theological approaches of the Catholic and other Protestant Churches. The qualification seeks to achieve the requirements for the preparation of men and women for the ordained ministry of the Church. This is done within a residential setting that promotes community life, spiritual formation, the nurturing of Christian piety and disciplined life, after the manner of Christ by the rhythm of daily prayer, meditation and worship, work and study, and community outreach. The result is an integrated and holistic educational and formative experience based on a rigorous academic qualification that promotes independent thinking, criticality and cognitive depth. Qualifying learners will be able to : Rationale: The qualification provides recognition to learners interested in ministry and leadership within the church and society. It offers an opportunity to integrate theory and practice in a manner that promotes personal and societal transformation. The qualification will, therefore, be of benefit to those pursuing a vocation in the ordained ministry of the church, and to those who are eager to understand their faith more deeply. Enquirers, the curious, and those eager to learn for its own sake will find the qualification intellectually challenging, socially relevant, and contextual, and will extend their vistas of knowledge. The qualification provides evidence that will be of use in the discernment processes used by the church and offers a foundation from which further ministerial formation may occur. The qualification provides recognition to learners who have proved themselves as competent to offer ministry and leadership within both church and society. It offers an opportunity to integrate theory and practice in a manner that promotes personal and societal transformation. Learners who complete the qualification will be positioned to enter the ministry of the Church and other faith-based ministries with a level of professionalism that will make them competitive. The bedrock standard for the Church to ordain ministers of the church is a Diploma in Theology (NQF level 6) and as such, learners with the Bachelor of Theology will have vast opportunities to enter the ordained ministry of the Church and other faith-based ministries. The qualification provides evidence that will be of use in the discernment processes used by the church and offers a foundation from which further ministerial formation may occur. The qualification set at NQF level 7 will allow learners to continue after this degree with post-graduate studies such as an Honours Degree in Theology or a Post Graduate Diploma in a cognate field. |

| INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY |
| The Bachelor of Theology is comparable to other qualifications in a similar or the same subject area and should be recognised locally and internationally as providing access to Masters or equivalent Post-graduate qualifications. The qualification is also designed to conform to the standards set by the Theological Education in the Anglican Communion Group (TEAC) authorised by the Anglican Primates Meeting to set a common standard of competence for all who are considered for the ordained ministry of the Anglican Church worldwide. The institution has compared the qualification to those offered by comparable Anglican theological institutions worldwide.
Country: United Kingdom Institution: Durham University Qualification Title: Bachelor of Arts in Theology, Ministry and Mission Similarities: Duration: Three years. Exit level outcomes (though the new qualification's outcomes are more expansive). The number of credits (both are 360). Theological fields of study. Differences: The number of minimum courses required to complete the qualification (24 for Durham University vs 34 for the new qualification in total). Study mode (mixed mode for the Durham University vs contact mode for the new qualification). The minimum number of credits/points at exit level (90 points for Durham University vs 120 Credits for the new qualification). The purposes are largely the same, especially in theoretical learning, with the main difference being that the seminary's programme demands an experiential learning component, while the Durham University only outlines it as a possibility. Theological fields of study - the seminary also incorporates the following areas of study, which the Durham University's Bachelor of Theology doesn't: Research; ethics; worldviews; biblical languages; biblical interpretation and exposition; and Work-Integrated Learning. Qualification Title: Bachelor of Ministry and Bachelor of Theology Finders University, Australia, Bachelor of Theology Areas of similarity include: Duration (3 years). Exit Level Outcomes, though the new qualification's outcomes are more expansive. Theological fields of study. Differences: The purposes are largely the same, especially in theoretical learning, with the main difference being that the new qualification demands an experiential learning component, while Ridley only outlines it as a possibility. The qualification has a wider range of elective modules, across all three years, with only nine modules being core, and the rest electives. The new qualification mainly features compulsory core and fundamental courses, 30 in total, and the learners may take up to four electives from a range of eight electives in total at the final academic exit level year. Up to a third of the qualification may be completed through electives in the non-theological field. The new qualification mainly features the theological field. Biblical languages are compulsory in the qualification but are electives in Ridley's qualification. Conclusion: The South African qualification compares favourably with the identified international qualifications as the curriculum is similar and the focus of the qualifications is on integrating the knowledge of the Christian faith with essential skills to minister to and lead Christian communities and contribute to the development and transformation of the broader society. |
