PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
Purpose:
The purpose of this part-qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Cutting Machine Maintenance Assistant. A Cutting Machine Maintenance Assistant repairs, maintains and adjusts a range of portable cutting machines and related equipment to ensure for good working order and condition. Rationale: This part-qualification will equip learners with the necessary skills and competence to operate as Cutting Machine Maintenance Assistants. After successful completion of this qualification, the learner will be skilled and capable of repairing and maintaining portable cutting machines and equipment. Learners will find employment as cutting machine maintenance assistants. These skills will also open opportunities for self-employment. Target groups identified include school leavers with an NQF Level 1 qualification or persons who have been working for three years as a Sewing Machine Mechanic in the clothing industry without formal qualifications and have the desire to formalise their skills and knowledge. Employers will benefit from appointing qualified workers in terms of increased productivity and ability to be competitive in the international market and seek markets abroad supplying quality apparel wear. |

Integrated Assessment: Integrated Formative Assessment: The skills development providers will use the curriculum to guide them on the stipulated internal assessment criteria and weighting. They will also apply the scope of practical skills and applied knowledge as stipulated by the internal assessment criteria. This formative assessment leads to entrance into the integrated external summative assessment. Integrated Summative Assessment: An external integrated summative assessment, conducted through the relevant QCTO Assessment Quality Partner is required for the issuing of this part-qualification. INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY |
This part-qualification was compared with components of two qualifications offered in India and New Zealand:
India: The Diploma in Sewing Machine Mechanic, which includes two years of experiential training, offered by ALT Training College, specifically references the following knowledge or theory component: New Zealand: The National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture (Mechanic) Level 3, offered by Competenz, is geared towards people working in the sewing machine maintenance and servicing areas of the Clothing Manufacturing industry. The compulsory sections of the qualification ensure that all holders have knowledge of workplace practice. Across levels 2 and 3 of this qualification, the following standards would be achieved: Knowledge of safe working practices in the apparel industry; Maintain fabric cutting equipment; and Maintain ancillary cutting room equipment. Conclusion: This part-qualification compares favourably with the above qualifications in terms of content and complexity. |
