PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of the Master of Management in African Philanthropy is to contribute to the field of management, business and non-profit management. There are very few graduates in this field compared to Europe and North America. This will be the first qualification by an African institution.

Qualifying learners will learn management skills in an African setting particularly in the emerging markets as well as managing resources. The qualification will close a knowledge gap in this area. Furthermore, the qualification aims to develop learners' abilities to identify and solve problems critically and creatively.

The qualification will be offered through course work and research. It is a one-year full-time qualification and two years part-time.

Rationale:
The absence of training and teaching in the area of Philanthropy led to the identification of the need to develop this qualification. In other parts of the world, this is a fully developed area. This institution will be the first in Africa to offer such a qualification. The need was also necessitated by demand from the market.

There is a huge gap in analytical and technical skills in the market especially for philanthropic foundations, non-governmental organisations (NGO), banks and Corporate Social Investment (CSI) units to deal with issues that have to do with grantmaking, venture capital, impact investment, philanthropy, wealth advisory and CSI among others. The market survey that was conducted among these different sectors revealed that most of the employees in these areas have not been trained to manage these portfolios and that had they received training, they would perform optimally.

Qualifying learners have a range of sectors to operate in. Some will fill the big gap in academia by becoming lecturers. Others will go into research and work for research institutions. The bigger proportion will operate in the management of the NGO sector, foundations, wealth advisory firms, law firms, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in businesses and policymaking bodies such as United Nations (UN), African Union, South African Development Community (SADC), European Union (EU) among others.

The qualification is the first of its kind but has been offered across the world by leading institutions such as Harvard, Yale, Indiana and Kent among others. Graduates will be sought after by both the private and public sector in such areas as management of wealth, policymaking, grantmaking, social investment and new investments such social impact bonds, venture philanthropy and impact investment among others. Qualifying learners will also be influential in the ethical leadership of businesses across Africa, reduce poverty and tackle the many challenges facing society from a humanistic perspective. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
Learners who fall outside of the normal admissions process who can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the institution that they have a suitably cognate qualification and/or experiential-or work-based learning which has taken the learner to an equivalent level of a qualification may be considered for admission and/or for the recognition of prior accredited and/or prior experiential learning.

Learners who, after such assessment, are deemed to have sufficient potential but need further academic development, may be required to broaden their curriculum to include preliminary programmes prior to admission or parallel programmes after admission.

Entry Requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Relevant Bachelor Honours, NQF Level 8.

  • Relevant Postgraduate Diploma in the related field, NQF Level 8.

  • EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    1. Apply appropriate methods of enquiry and analysis using a broad range of conceptual and analytical frameworks and tools to investigate complex problems in the African Philanthropy context.
    2. Generate solutions and insights based on critical engagement with the Philanthropy literature to address challenges in a range of African Gifting/Philanthropy conditions.
    3. Evaluate the probable consequences of management implementation of solutions and insights within the context of African philanthropy, generated through business-management concepts and frameworks, and address the intended and unintended consequences of such interventions.
    4. Apply strategic leadership and problem-solving skills in complex and rapidly changing organisational environments in African Gifting and Philanthropy.
    5. Exercise ethical leadership, good governance and autonomous judgement relating to complex organisational and professional issues within an environment of competing values in the African Philanthropy context.
    6. Conceptualise and undertake independent research into complex problems in the African Philanthropy context. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The following Associated Assessment Criteria will be applied in an integrated manner across the Exit Level Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate depth in the investigation, analysis and solving of complex and ambiguous problems using a broad range of conceptual and analytical frameworks and tools within the African Philanthropy context.
  • Engage various literature reviews and apply strategic thinking to generate and implement solutions within African Gifting/Philanthropy environment.
  • Apply business management concepts and frameworks to effectively solve problems for the community, national and global contexts.
  • Apply strategic leadership skills and knowledge to adapt within a continuously changing organisational environments in African Gifting and Philanthropy.
  • Exercise good judgements and decisions using the principles of leadership and corporate governance within conflicting issues of interest.
  • Conduct independent research and produce a research report within an African Philanthropy context.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Integrated assessment will be achieved by a variety of strategies. These include written examinations, group and individual projects and assignments plus one independent research project. Some of the criteria may be assessed through observation of the learners during their presentations in class. Integrated assessment will be both formative and summative.

    Formative assessment will take place during seminar and class presentations, discussions and project sessions. Self and peer assessment will contribute to the formative assessment.

    Summative components of assessment include the independent research project in which learners undertake a traditional research project where learners would define the research question, identify appropriate research methodologies, undertake a literature review, critique the literature, collect and analyse data, and finally compile a report.

    The written examinations will require integration of information from the different areas of the course content.

    Internal institution requirements govern how and by whom moderation is performed. For example, external examiners are appointed. Such moderation seeks, inter alia, to ensure that, where appropriate, learners will be able to comply with professional and academic requirements.
