| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| Purpose:
The qualification is designed to provide candidates with a well-rounded education through a broad knowledge base combined with focused theory and methodologies of the discipline concerned that will enable them to enter the world of Information Technology Web Design and Development at a professional level. Amongst other, learners will develop expertise in the Global Standard Knowledge that all training materials in this particular field are aligned with. The qualification also covers aspects of web-based marketing. This standardised knowledge set will give the qualifying learner the necessary understanding of best practices to manage any project effectively. This qualification focuses on computers and Information Technology, but differs from a Computer Science Degree as learners are expected to study Management and Information Systems, Web Design and Development, but with reduced requirements for Mathematics. A broad spectrum of programming languages relevant to Web Design and Development will receive major focus. During the 3rd year of studies, the learner needs to complete a Capstone Project involving the integration of knowledge acquired in all modules that constitute the qualification. After completion of this qualification the learner will therefore have the necessary fundamental, conceptual and applied competence in web design and development context to enter the job market confidently. Rationale: This qualification addresses the human resource development needs of the country. There is a growing need for graduates with a qualification in web development and associated digital multimedia information design. Information Technology (IT) is one of the fastest growing industries in the world which creates significant career opportunities for learners. There is a wealth of agencies that specialise in creating and maintaining websites for a variety of purposes such as marketing and advertising, public awareness, information and advocacy, as well as education and training. With the rapid growth in web-based Online and blended learning, educational institutions and training providers count on expertise in Web Design and development as well as Mobile App Development for learning purposes. If a company doesn't use these service providers, they usually have their own web designer or in-house team which includes an in-house web master with a dedicated task. Career opportunities are extensive given that computer-based information systems are almost universal. Graduates are likely to find employment as a Web site and applications developer, Games Developer, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Specialist, Social Media Manager, and many more. Qualifying learners may prefer to set up their own business venture, or work as a freelancer. Alternatively, their flair for design could see them working for a multimedia design studio or an advertising company. Their development skills in the computer software and media application environment could lead to a job in software engineering, testing/research, or even technical writing, which can be carried out in a variety of settings. Large IT and telecommunication companies also value these creative-technical skills. |
| LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
| Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The qualification allows for open access; therefore, provision should be made for prior learning to be recognised so that candidates have the opportunity to gain access, obtain the qualification in part through the RPL process, or obtain advanced placement in the prescribed qualification (fast-tracking). Candidates may be awarded credits for certain modules completed successfully. RPL candidates must demonstrate competence in respect of certain specified knowledge, skills and/or attitudes pertaining to this programme. Through RPL, such candidates also have the opportunity to enter into more advanced programmes sooner and further their studies to acquire additional qualifications compared to the state of affairs at the point of applying for RPL. The specific form of assessment to determine the extent of Recognition of Prior Learning will depend on evidence produced by each individual applicant. In case of the applicant not being able to produce a certificate of credits gained, the assessment will at least involve the presentation of a portfolio of practical work as demonstration of applied knowledge and skills. Entry Requirements: The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is: Or |

Assessment is thus conducted throughout the duration of the qualification as a mechanism to monitor learning progress, identify weak points or limitations and give guidance to individual learners towards further learning and professional development (formative assessment). This complemented by summative assessment with the emphasis on measuring the ability of the student to integrated knowledge and skills from different related modules (using cognitive skills of application, analysis and synthesis). Since the execution of job-related tasks require the integration of theory with the application of knowledge and skills, assessment practice will as far as possible be conducted along the same line. This means that assessment tools will be suitable to assess mastery of knowledge as well as skills together, rather than written tests and exam alone. Different outcomes are thus also assessed in a combined manner. |
