PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

Purpose:
The purpose of the qualification is to enable learners to develop in-depth, advanced discipline-specific skills and applied competence in management to provide opportunities for continued personal intellectual growth, productive economic activity and making a rewarding contribution to society.

Also, the qualification aims to empower learners to solve complex business-related problems in a focused way and to effectively manage and allocate resources, to communicate effectively, and to contribute to knowledge and socio-economic transformation responsibly and ethically.

The qualification endeavours to provide South Africa with highly skilled individuals particularly from disadvantaged communities in business administration, to ensure that the leadership base of innovative and knowledge-based economic and scholarly activity is strengthened and diversified.

Qualification outcomes: The qualifying learner will:

Independently design a research project and execute such a plan.

Apply advanced scientific methods responsibly.

Efficiently manage the collection, organisation and analysis of relevant information.

Analyse theory and practical problems to contribute to the existing body of knowledge related to a specific aspect of management.

Contribute to the development of new theories, models and practices.

Conduct further academic research independently to contribute to local research output.

Write and present technical reports to professional audiences, including the management environment.

Rationale:
The qualification provides the opportunity for a learner to undertake independent research and advanced study under the guidance of a supervisor, building on knowledge gained in a particular subject area, generally at Masters or equivalent level. The thesis presented will constitute a substantial contribution to experience in the chosen field of study and will embody the original work of the learner.

The qualification will provide South Africa with researchers that have specialised theoretical knowledge and practical skill in a research area from which the institution can research the highest level, thereby contributing to the national development agenda.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The institution's RPL Policy makes provision for the application of RPL for access, as well as exemption.

ACCESS:
The National Policy states that qualifications registered on the NQF must provide alternative entry requirements so that candidates can be admitted to the qualification. It is therefore possible to admit an applicant who has not achieved a Master's Degree, but who has extensive evidence of formal research conducted at the cognitive level required. Although the institution is able to provide for alternative entry routes, RPL for access will only be applied in highly exceptional circumstances. This view is based on:

The specialist knowledge and the intensive research required for doctoral studies;

The necessary foundational and advanced competencies that need to be in place to ensure learner success (given the stated rationale for both doctoral qualifications namely, to '[build] on knowledge gained in a particular subject area at masters level').

EXEMPTION:
The Institution recognises that there may be exemption opportunities on the different phases of the qualification.

To optimally support learners, both doctoral qualifications are divided into three phases - the initial proposal, the proposal and the thesis/candidacy phase. RPL may be applied to the pre-proposal and proposal phases - for instance:

Qualifying learners (who meet the stated entry requirements) who have done substantial documented pre-proposal research can gain access to the proposal phase;

Learners transfer from other institutions with a completed proposal can enter the proposal phase directly; and/or

Learners with completed doctoral qualifications decide to pursue a second doctorate can proceed to the proposal phase directly.

Entry Requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:

Master of Administration in Public Management, NQF Level 9.
Or

Master of Commerce in Investment Management, NQF Level 9.

Master of Commerce in Business Management, NQF Level 9.

This qualification consists of the following compulsory module at Level 10 totalling 360 Credits.

Integrated Assessment:
The qualification consists of research by thesis only. The qualification has three (3) phases of assessment as set out below:
PHASE 1: PROPOSAL:
Assessments:
Assignment 1: Submission of proposal.
Assignment 2: Defence of proposal.

Assignment 1 requires the submission of a full proposal within the first year of enrolment. The proposal has to contain at least the following components:
1. Chapter 1: Introduction and background (approximately 10 pages).
2. Chapter 2: Literature review (approximately 15 pages).
3. Chapter 3: Research methodology (approximately 10 pages).

The proposal will make a substantial contribution to the thesis and demonstrates the learner's initial competency in the particular area of research, as well as the selection of a particular research methodology.

If the proposal is accepted the learner is required to defend the proposal as part of Assignment 2 in front of a panel appointed by the Doctoral Research Committee.

PHASE 2: COMPLETION OF THE RESEARCH AND THESIS:
Assignment 3: Completion of thesis.
Assignment 4: Presentation to panel.

The thesis, as Assignment 3, is completed under the guidance of a supervisor.

PHASE 3: EXAMINATION OF THE THESIS:
Handing in the thesis
A learner can hand in the thesis at any time, but the supervisor has to sign off. The marking process for the thesis will start immediately and feedback will be provided with feedback as soon as possible.

Marking and final submission:
Once the thesis has been submitted (three ring-bound copies) with permission from the supervisor, it is sent for external examination. After examination, some learners may then still need to make corrections for the thesis to be of the required standard for submission of the three leather-bound copies to the Learning Resources Centre/Library. Learners who require extensions on the thesis may do so in terms of the extension rules and subject to the exclusion provisions.

Marking, presentation and results:
The Doctoral Research Committee will manage the marking process and will appoint two external examiners to mark the thesis. Should the external markers and the Committee be of the opinion that the thesis is not up to standard, it will be referred back to the learner to address the shortcomings. Supervisors are not allowed to be part of the Committee for the purpose of considering and discussing the submission of a particular learner.

Once the thesis has been accepted the learner will be requested to present and defend the research, as Assignment 4, in front of a panel appointed by the Doctoral Research Committee. The supervisor of the particular learner may not be a member of the panel. Upon passing the panel presentation, the learner will be notified of the outcome. Should the learner fail, another presentation has to be scheduled at a later date.

Work-integrated learning does not form part of the qualification.

INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY

The Auckland University Business School (New Zealand), Doctor of Philosophy:
Doctor of Philosophy qualification highlights:

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is an advanced qualification awarded for original contribution to research in a learner's chosen discipline, with the findings published in a thesis.

An appointed supervisor, co-supervisor and possibly an advisory committee directs this PhD. The learner can complete this qualification within three to four years of full-time study or on a part-time basis.

The qualification targets learners wishing to pursue an academic or research career and all departments of the University of Auckland Business School offer it.

Eligibility:
A Master of Commerce with Honours (First Class or Second Class First Division), or an approved equivalent from some other recognised university. Bachelor of Commerce Honours First Class Honours from the University of Auckland may also qualify.

The University of Sydney Business School offers Doctor Of Philosophy In Business:
Description: The Doctor of Philosophy in Business is a higher qualification by research. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) learners may choose an area of specialisation for their PhD from any of the Disciplines in the University of Sydney Business School.

Qualification Rules:
The institution awards a PhD qualification to a thesis considered to be a substantial original contribution to knowledge in its field. Three examiners receive the thesis of 80,000 words to report in their opinion:

The thesis is a significant and unique contribution to the understanding of the subject concerned.

The thesis displays evidence of high-quality research.

The thesis displays evidence of independent critical ability.

The literary presentation of the thesis is satisfactory.

Admission to Research Qualifications:
Learners wishing to undertake a PhD in the Business School must be able to demonstrate that they have the necessary academic background in the field of study they want to pursue.

To be eligible for admission to PhD candidature in the Business School, learners are required to hold an undergraduate qualification with First or Second class (Division One) Honours in the proposed field of study - or Master's qualification with at least an 80% average and a 25% research thesis component from a recognised University or its equivalent. An Honours qualification in Australia involves four years' study, including the preparation of a dissertation based on supervised research.

Duration:
PhD candidature duration: three to four years full time or six to eight years part-time, which include a probationary period of 12 months.

The University of California Anderson School of Management:
UCLA Anderson offers doctorates in seven areas of study. The doctoral learners come from around the globe and possess a broad range of research interests and experiences. Working closely with faculty, both in the classroom and in the development of research, learners reach the highest levels of scholarly achievement. The qualification's primary focus is on independent inquiry, research methodology and publication of research results.

Successful learners are those with the discipline, innate creativity, and intellectual curiosity necessary to meet the challenges of a demanding academic program. Learners can complete the qualification in four years. Learners enrol full time, taking a minimum of 12 graduate units per quarter. The lecture and group seminar coursework must minimally satisfy requirements of the major field (which vary by area), a research requirement, and a breadth requirement. Learners generally are in residence over the summer, writing a research paper in the first summer and collaborating with faculty on research projects in subsequent years, often as part of the Summer Doctoral Fellows Program, which employs learners in research assistantships.

Prerequisites for entering the qualification:
A bachelor's qualification is the only educational prerequisite for the UCLA Anderson Doctoral qualification. Admitted learners generally exhibit proficiency in business administration, quantitative methods, or one of the social sciences. Admitted learners should consult with their areas on whether they need additional preparation in the summer before entering the program.

Course Research and Breadth Requirements:
In addition to individual requirements from the areas of study, known as essential field requirements, all PhD learners take 13 quarter courses from outside the major field of study--5 research courses and eight breadth courses. To meet the research coursework requirement, the learner typically takes one or two courses covering traditional statistical methods and two or three classes covering more advanced topics, such as multivariate methods, econometrics and causal modelling. Many of these courses are found in other departments at UCLA, including Economics, Education, Mathematics, Psychology, Sociology, and Statistics. The breadth coursework must meet one of four criteria:
1. To gain more knowledge about non-management disciplines that support the learner's primary scholarly interests.
2. To become more knowledgeable about research in other management disciplines.
3. To define a minor field of study.
4. To deepen methodological capabilities.

Doctoral Dissertation:
The dissertation culminates the learner's academic endeavours of substantial magnitude, the thesis should make a significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the chosen field of study. It should be of sufficient originality and quality to merit publication, either in whole or in part, in a professional journal or as a book that other academics would want on their shelves. The dissertation serves as the primary positioning of a learner in his or her chosen discipline and shows others in the field what the content and quality of an individual's research is likely to be. The learner defends the dissertation at a final oral examination. It must be completed and accepted within seven and one-half years from the date of entry into the program.

University of Liverpool Management School Management PhD:
The objective of the qualification is to develop an understanding and critical appreciation of alternative approaches, methodologies and paradigms of research in the field of business and management. To achieve this, learners will demonstrate independent learning in the production of quality research projects to advance their knowledge and understanding through the use of critical analysis and interpretation.

Subject Overview:
While studying a PhD qualification, learners will be working closely with both their supervisory team and the University of Liverpool Management School academic community. This working relationship ensures that their final submission is a comprehensive thesis within a specified research area and consequently will be able to defend their thesis during their viva voce. The qualification includes the completion of requisite skills modules which provides learners with the opportunity to identify and develop the knowledge, skills, behaviours and personal qualities that all Postgraduate researchers should acquire over the course their PhD. Researchers must introduce their research to that outside of their discipline and to discuss this with academics, fellow research learners and visitors.
