PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
Purpose:
The purpose of this part-qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Glass Manufacturing Feederman. A Glass Manufacturing Feederman sets-up, monitors and maintains forehearth and feeder to optimise glass condition and gob shape to ensure optimal container production.

Rationale:
The manufacturing industries are diverse and cover a range of different products manufactured characterised by sophisticated manufacturing processes which require specific and specialised skill in glass-forming. This part-qualification is aimed at responding to the need for the development of specialised glass-forming skills required in the sector for quality glass products to meet the diverse needs of businesses and individual consumers. Glass forming is a unique skill required in the sector and the skills sets covered in the qualification will enable career progression within the sector to practice as a Glass Manufacturing Feederman.

This part-qualification will create job opportunities to individuals who, when employed, will contribute to the South African economy as glass is a locally produced commodity in the supply chain of which a significant amount is exported regionally and internationally thus contributing to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Furthermore, this part-qualification creates opportunities for career growth in the manufacturing industries.

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY
International comparability was conducted to compare best practice and training offered in the field of glass manufacturing. The countries visited include the United Kingdom (Scotland and Britain) as they regarded as leaders for best practice in glass-forming practices. The comparison focused on the type of qualifications offered that are nationally recognised in terms of scope, level and duration for completion.

    Scotland:
The Occupational Certificate: Glass Manufacturing Feederman was compared with the SVQ 3 Glass manufacturing offered by GQA Qualifications limited. This qualification is aimed at individuals wishing to gain knowledge of working safely and effectively in the glass related working environment. The qualification can be delivered through off-the-job learning or through workplace assessment, which compares favourably with the South African qualification. The qualification, however, differs slightly with the South African in terms of the curriculum model as the South African qualification curriculum is composed of three curriculum components.

    The content covered includes:
  • Maintain health and safety within the glass manufacturing working environment.
  • Communicate and work with others in glass manufacturing.
  • Prepare and operate equipment/machinery/tools in glass manufacturing.
  • Handle materials or components in glass manufacturing.
  • Check the quality of the product in glass manufacturing.
  • Process products and materials by applying coatings or treatments in glass manufacturing.
  • Receive glass raw materials for manufacturing operations.
  • Prepare glass raw materials for manufacturing operations.
  • Control the flow of glass raw materials through the melting process.
  • Monitor the supply of glass raw materials into the melting process.
  • Control the operating conditions within the melting process in glass manufacturing.
  • Control melted glass.
  • Form glass products.
  • Anneal glass products and materials in glass manufacturing.
  • Maintain hygiene in glass manufacturing and processing.

    Britain:
GQA Level 3 in Glass Manufacturing from RT Resources Limited was compared with Occupational Certificate: Glass Manufacturing Feederman. This qualification is one of the qualifications in the modern apprenticeship programme. It is intended for learners working in the glass manufacturing environment who deal with assignments relating to receiving and batching of raw materials before they are processed and the control of heating equipment to melt and form glass from the raw materials. The qualification differs slightly with the South African qualification in terms of the curriculum consisting of mandatory and optional units which compare favourably with the South African qualification. The qualification is achieved in the workplace and is based on the ongoing assessment skills acquired and developed through time.

    Units covered include:
  • Maintain health and safety to reduce risks
  • Communicate and work with others.
  • Locate, handle and position materials or components.
  • Identify and rectify technical problems in a glass or glass related working environment.
  • Store products and materials in glass processing.
  • Prepare and operate equipment/machinery/tools in glass processing.
  • Cut glass in glass processing.
  • Process Products and Materials by shaping.
  • Processing Products and Materials by assembly.
  • Package glass products for storage.

    Conclusion:
The South African qualification compares favourably with the international offerings in glass manufacturing in the United Kingdom (Scotland and Britain) in terms of the content covered in the qualifications. The qualifications benchmarked differ slightly in terms of the curriculum structure and duration with the South African qualification in that the qualification in Britain and Scotland range from 12-18 months while the South African qualification is offered within two years. Another difference with the British qualification is that it does not have part qualifications or optional units for specialisation as opposed to the Scottish glass manufacturing qualification has optional units for specialisation for producing glass windows, doors and glass containers.
