PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of the qualification is also to produce graduates with expertise in research, which includes the ability to evaluate and implement research findings in the practice of pharmacy specialisation and the ability to guide junior candidates if the graduate is in an educational setting usually as a component of Work-Integrated Learning.

Rationale:
South Africa is faced with human resource problems in terms of healthcare service delivery. There is a shortage of skilled personnel in key areas of the health sector, and the shortage of clinical pharmacists has been acknowledged. There is also an uneven distribution of pharmacists between rationale the public and private sector, with the public sector struggling to attract and retain pharmacists, despite the introduction of various incentives. Training pharmacists with specialised clinical skills might address some of the problem areas in health care.

  • Integrate theory with practice through the application of theoretical knowledge to highly complex problems in a wide range of professional contexts in pharmacy
  • Use problem-solving techniques, which draw on her or his multi-faceted knowledge, in order to solve problems.
  • Communicate efficiently and effectively with patients and other health care workers as a team.
  • Demonstrate competence and responsibility in the use of instruments and equipment necessary for this practice.
  • Conduct all research with due regard for the moral, legal and ethical accountability and requirements of the profession.
