PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
Purpose:
The purpose of the Advanced Certificate in Art Direction is to provide learners with the specific, required skills necessary for an 'all-rounder' Art Direction learner both in local and international contexts.

Various creative departments within an institution must allow for learners to regularly practice skills in collaboration with the Photography, Film, Acting and Animation departments, mimicking the requirements and interpersonal skills necessary to succeed professionally.

Qualifying learners will be able to:
  • Demonstrate a skilled level of technical proficiency over the tools, processes and practical application of techniques used per best-practice standards of the entertainment industries.
  • Understand ethical conduct in a multi-cultural, difference-friendly and high-pressure environment.
  • Practice professionalism while closely working 'on set' with actors, models and performers of different cultural backgrounds.
  • Take direction and methodically follow briefing instructions from art-directors, producers and the like.
  • Evaluate issues and practice problem-solving within restricted scopes of timelines, budgets and available tools and materials.
  • Practice interpersonal communication to successfully work as part of a creative team.

The qualification provides learners with the opportunities to practice and develop the necessary interpersonal skills, theoretical knowledge, technical skills, practical techniques, conceptual and creative know-how.

    Rationale:
This qualification provides art-oriented learners with an Advanced Certificate in Art Direction. This qualification is grounded in a skills-based foundation with a theoretical component complementing their practical output. Modules provide opportunities for learning the specific skills necessary for an 'all-rounder' art direction learner and with a secondary intention of enabling the learner to become aware of which direction they want to specialise in, either in practice (in a professional or personal capacity) or during further studies.

The qualification speaks to the needs of the Entertainment industries for skilled and entry-level crafts-practitioners. This qualification promotes multi-skilled practitioners to meet the demands of the Film, Television, Theatre, Advertising, Fashion and online Creative Content Development sectors. The ever-growing entertainment and media industry offers various economic opportunities and employment locally and internationally.

Learners can access opportunities and work at practitioner-level in one, or a combination of the following career fields: Make-up, Special effects make-up, Property (props) fabrication, Set design, Visual Communication and Art Direction.

Regarding the Film and Television industry specifically, there are a few points to note:
  • This Institution strongly affiliates with the CFC (Cape Film Commission) which recognises the value of having a strong base of industry-trained learners. This relationship between this Institution and the CFC assists in the placing of learners into local and international productions.
  • The South African Government recognises the significant role played by the Film and Television industry in our economy and the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) provides assorted incentives to promote the attraction of 'foreign-based film productions to shoot on location in South Africa; to assist local film producers in producing local content and assist local emerging black filmmakers to take up big productions and thus contribute towards employment creation.
  • The qualification falls in line with the ethos of the DAC's mandate, which 'develops and promote arts and culture in South Africa, through mutually beneficial partnerships to ensure the sustainability of the sector). Learners can further their studies through diplomas or degrees in Film, Fine art, Design and Visual Communication studies.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The institution has mechanisms and systems that facilitate RPL, which also serve learners for distance qualifications, namely, RPL for Alternative Access, RPL for Credit to enhance Credit Accumulation and Transfer, and RPL for Advanced Standing. These RPL systems are developed based on the national RPL policies.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a mechanism for formally recognising and placing a value on what people have learned through their daily life, work experience, informal and non-formal learning. RPL is an enabling mechanism for learners to gain alternative access to further learning opportunities or improved career prospects.

There are two main pathways of RPL, namely RPL for Credits and RPL for Access. Both pathways are made available at this Institution.

    RPL for Access:
At this Institution, RPL for Alternative Access is possible for all learners who cannot access higher education study through the traditional route of matriculation exemption certificates. The institution has a comprehensive system to deal with the process to be facilitated.

Steps in this process include: Understanding the context, conversations about possibilities, sharing in a discussion, collecting and validating evidence, assessment, moderating assessments, reporting, feedback and data reporting.

RPL regards formal, non-formal and informal knowledge for Access assessment measured along with course-specific competencies. Assessments and measures include but are not limited to a competency-based interview with an academic staff member, skills assessments, complexity and potential assessments along the NQF, formal qualifications, references, study readiness related competence, and any evidence of learning obtained. An assessment presents this and measures each module's competency. The campus can then make informed decisions on grating access and at which complexity level while bridgeable identifying gaps if need be. Personal Development Guides (PDP) apply to identified gaps and seek learner-specific solutions to bridge those gaps. RPL for access is at its core, a developmental approach to further learning and widening access for all where appropriate.

Formal, non-formal and informal knowledge in the RPL for Access assessment measures the competencies.

    Integrated Assessment.
Due to the practical nature of this qualification, learners receive assistance with the achievement of outcomes per module through continuous 'hands-on' formative feedback. This feedback is essential to ensure successful completion of their summative assessments. For summative assessments, the learner's performance is evaluated based on the demonstration of their competence in the application of the outcomes of each module.

'Formal' summative assessments (Mid-year and End of year) run twice a year and require learners to produce practical work for assignments under the supervision of their lecturers. These major summative assessments require a learner's demonstration of the integration of part or all of the Exit Level Outcomes (ELOs) about the qualification. Additionally, these 'major' assessments count toward the majority of their mark. For the Final 'major' summative assessment, the department appoints external examiners from outside this institution to assist in evaluating the practical work of learners.

Regarding Work Integrated Learning, Film companies recruit learners to assist on outside productions. After that, each learner submits a portfolio of evidence accompanied by documentation, including photographs and letters his/her head of the department and the director or producer. Wherever possible, lecturers visit learners on set and compile a portfolio of evidence on their performance in the workplace. The Institution keeps these reports on file for reference and a later assessment of the learner concerned.

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY
The qualification is comparable to the following accredited qualifications from international higher educational institutions:
Diploma of Screen and Media (Film TV SPFX Fashion Editorial) Academy of Cinema Graphic Make-up, Australia. (1 year, full-time). This qualification offers 16 modules in total and favourably compares to the qualification at this institution. This Advanced Certificate in Art Direction includes the topics covered within these qualification modules.

The Iver Make-up Academy, United Kingdom (UK) (1 year, full-time) offers an Advanced Certificate in Make-up and Hair Artistry. This qualification offers similar modules and assignments and continuous formative feedback. However, they differ regarding the 'Photography and Digital Media' module. This institution's qualification empowers the learner to document their creations in a studio environment, whereas the UK's institution brings in outside photographers to work with learners in a conclusive assessment.

Delamar Academy, United Kingdom (1 year, full-time) offers a Cert HE Professional Make-up Design. This qualification offers similar modules and assignments, modes of instruction (largely practical demonstrations) and one-on-one attention to learner's practical work. This institution's qualification differs slightly with the UK's in that these modules are all compulsory, whereas, with Delamar's qualification, learners can choose a 'specialisation module' in the second semester.

Make-up Designory, United States of America (1 year, full-time) offers a Master Make-up Artistry qualification. The qualification's duration is shorter at 24 weeks compared to this institution's, which is 32 teaching weeks, but both have comparable career opportunities.

Overall, the Advanced Certificate in Art Direction offers a major advantage over the above qualifications as it covers a wider range of industry related skills and training.

The ELO's in this qualification are engineered not only into the learning path and curricular. The qualification offers unique, real-world opportunities for interdisciplinary work, daily practice of interpersonal communication and professionalism within a creative environment.
